The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its next Costume Institute exhibition, which serves as the inspiration for the annual Met Gala, will celebrate the work of legendary Spanish and British designer John Galliano, born Juan Carlos Galliano Guillén in Gibraltar. Titled John Galliano: Horizons, the exhibition is already generating intense discussion across the fashion world, not only because of Galliano's extraordinary creative legacy but also because of the controversies that have shaped his career.
Set to open on May 9, 2027, immediately following the 2027 Met Gala, the exhibition will run through January 9, 2028 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It marks the first major museum retrospective dedicated entirely to Galliano and makes him only the third living designer to receive a solo Costume Institute exhibition, following Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo.

In 2011, Galliano was dismissed from Dior after making antisemitic remarks in Paris, later receiving a conviction in France related to those comments. The incident effectively ended his career at one of luxury fashion's most prestigious houses.

Andrew Bolton and Vogue's Anna Wintour reportedly consulted Jewish community leaders during the planning process to ensure the exhibition responsibly addresses Galliano's past while presenting a complete portrait of his life and career. Bolton noted that the exhibit “considers both how Galliano has remapped the world through fashion and how his conduct, its consequences, and changing cultural values have reshaped our understanding of his work.”

Jewish leader Rabbi Rick Jacobs of the Union for Reform Judaism in North America president, said that Galliano deserves a second chance. Jacobs told the Times Galliano “was open. He looked right at us and spoke in a clear way, not as if he had memorized talking points. The fear clearly was the show could be met with a lot of resistance — not just skepticism, but a feeling of it’s wrong.”

Museum officials have emphasized that John Galliano: Horizons is intended to be a comprehensive examination of the designer's career rather than an uncritical celebration.
