Nine years after Kylie Jenner went viral for her celebrity group photo at the Met Gala, the bathroom mirror selfie is officially back and far more crowded. At the 2026 Met Gala on May 4, a new generation of A-listers recreated the now-infamous 2017 snapshot.

This time, the viral moment came courtesy of Bhavitha Mandava, who managed to capture a chaotic yet star-studded frame packed with some of the biggest names in entertainment. Front and center in the now-circulating image, Bhavitha Mandava, appears dressed in a surprisingly low-key ensemble of trousers resembling jeans and a casual top styled by Chanel.

Behind her, a tight cluster of celebrities squeezed into the mirror frame, including Margot Robbie, Ayo Edebiri, Blackpink members, Gracie Abrams, and Rachel Sennott.

While the selfie looks chaotic, the fashion behind it was strategic. Gracie Abrams embraced the evening’s “Fashion is Art” theme in a gold Chanel gown inspired by Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt. Margot Robbie, also in Chanel, wore a champagne-toned dress that reportedly required 761 hours of craftsmanship.

The Kylie Jenner Effect

To understand why this moment resonates, it’s impossible to ignore its origin. Back in 2017, Kylie Jenner gathered a group of celebrities for a bathroom mirror selfie that quickly became one of the most recognizable images in Met Gala history.

The theme that year, “Art of the In-Between,” celebrated Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. Kylie herself wore a fringed Versace look paired with a platinum blonde wig.

Jenner's photo features Kim Kardashian, A$AP Rocky, Kendall Jenner, Brie Larson, Lily Aldridge, disgraced rapper P. Diddy and Paris Jackson.

At the time, Jenner's selfie was considered to break the rules as the event chair Anna Wintour had always strictly prohibited pictures once you’re past the famous Met Gala stairs and inside the venue.
