Zendaya delivered one of her most meaningful fashion moments yet at the Rome premiere of 'The Drama,' and it came with a story that extends far beyond the red carpet.
On March 26 at Cinema Adriano in Rome, the star stepped out in a sculptural black gown from Armani Privé, instantly shifting the tone of her press tour wardrobe.
Defined by a plunging neckline, delicate ruffled trim, and a sharply contoured silhouette that flared into a fluid hem, the dress was equal parts architectural and sensual.
It marked a striking departure from the bridal-inspired white looks she has consistently worn while promoting the film, yet still felt deeply intentional within the larger narrative. Because this wasn’t just another couture moment. It was borrowed history.
“And now for SOMETHING BORROWED …” wrote her longtime stylist Law Roach on X, revealing that the gown came from the personal archive of Cate Blanchett. "Thank you to Cate Blanchett who wore this Armani Prive dress in 2022 and 2025 and lent it to us from her personal archive," he added.
Blanchett first wore the design at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, before bringing it back for a second outing at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, cementing her ongoing commitment to rewearing and preserving couture. Now, on Zendaya, the dress takes on a third life, bridging two generations of red carpet mastery.
Styled with a softly waved bob, glowing natural glam, and minimal jewelry, Zendaya allowed the craftsmanship of the gown to take center stage.
The inky black fabric, paired with its sculptural construction, created a powerful contrast against the softer, more romantic looks she has favored throughout the tour. Yet rather than feeling like a break, the moment reads as an evolution.
Throughout the 'The Drama' press circuit, Zendaya has leaned heavily into a wedding-coded aesthetic, appearing in a series of ethereal white gowns that subtly mirror the film’s themes.
Just days earlier in Paris, she wore a backless white design by Louis Vuitton, complete with a sweeping black train reminiscent of a veil. On March 25, she briefly softened the narrative in a peach chiffon look from Matières Fécales’ Spring/Summer 2026 collection, an airy, romantic interlude styled again by Roach.
And in Los Angeles on March 17, she revisited her own fashion history, rewearing her 2015 Oscars gown by Vivienne Westwood, elevated with Art Deco–inspired diamonds from Chopard.
It’s also a reflection of where Zendaya is right now, firmly in her spotlight era, commanding global attention while making increasingly thoughtful, referential fashion choices.
After months of premieres, press, and international travel, she is expected to step back and refocus on her personal life once the tour concludes, making moments like this feel even more considered.
