2016 is trending, but today we are reminiscing about 2007. Disney Channel nostalgia has a way of resurfacing when people least expect it. A recent throwback shared on the official Disney Channel Instagram feed reminded fans of a pop culture moment that still feels delightfully surreal. Shakira once guest-starred on Wizards of Waverly Place, and yes, it was exactly as iconic as it sounds.

The post quickly pulled longtime viewers back into a very specific era of television. The late 2000s were the peak years of the Disney Channel, when sitcoms dominated after-school programming and celebrity crossovers felt effortless rather than calculated.

The Wizards of Waverly Place Era That Defined Disney Channel

Wizards of Waverly Place debuted in 2007 and became one of the network’s most successful live-action series. The show followed the Russo siblings as they navigated teenage life while secretly training to become family wizards. Comedy, magic, and sibling rivalry blended into a formula that connected instantly with young audiences.

The series also marked a major turning point for Selena Gomez, whose role as Alex Russo helped define a generation of Disney Channel stars. Wizards was not just a show people watched. It was part of daily routines, sleepovers, and after-school conversations.

Shakira’s Guest Appearance Was Pure Late 2000s Magic

Shakira appeared in season three playing herself, which made the cameo even more memorable. Rather than disappearing into a fictional role, she leaned fully into her global superstar identity. The episode built its plot around her fame, allowing the Russo family to collide with celebrity culture through the show’s signature magical chaos.

At the time, Shakira was already a worldwide phenomenon. She had chart-topping hits, unmistakable style, and a level of star power that extended far beyond Disney Channel’s usual guest lineup.

In this episode, Alex (played by Selena Gomez), Justin (played by David Henrie), and Max (played by Jake T. Austin) are shocked to discover that the international music sensation Shakira is actually their Uncle Kelbo (played by Jeff Garlin). Uncle Kelbo has been abusing one of the key Wizard Rules, which has led to his inability to control his transformations between himself and Shakira. Due to an ancient wizard law that forbids using magic for fame and riches, the kids must find a way to help their uncle transform back into his true self permanently.

The episode was a success, and both singers showcased their harmonies. Interestingly, according to IMDb, Shakira's role as "Uncle Kelbo" marked her first acting performance since the 1994 Colombian telenovela "El Oasis."
