Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her longtime partner, Riley Roberts, have reportedly called it quits. The New York congresswoman and her college sweetheart "quietly ended" their relationship "some time ago," according to an Aug. 12 report from The New York Times. The couple had been together for more than a decade and announced their engagement in 2022.

The news comes after renewed interest in Ocasio-Cortez's personal life following her decision to publicly document the process of freezing her eggs. While AOC has spoken candidly about fertility, family planning, and the scrutiny women face when making those decisions, she has remained notably private about her relationship status.

Here's what we know about the reported Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Riley Roberts breakup, their long relationship and what AOC has said about love, marriage and her future.

Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Riley Roberts Break Up?

According to multiple reports, yes. PEOPLE reported on Aug. 12 that Ocasio-Cortez – who is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress– and Roberts discreetly called off their engagement, citing The New York Times' reporting that the relationship ended "some time ago."

TMZ reported one day earlier that the pair had actually separated roughly two years ago. The outlet attributed that timeline to Puck chief Washington correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell and said multiple Capitol Hill sources indicated that Roberts and Ocasio-Cortez had not been seen together publicly in a long time.

That would mean the relationship may have ended well before the breakup became public knowledge. Ocasio-Cortez's representative declined to comment. The congresswoman herself has also avoided publicly detailing the reported split.

AOC and Riley Roberts Met at Boston University

The relationship stretched back long before Ocasio-Cortez became one of the country's most recognizable members of Congress. Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts met when they were undergraduates at Boston University, connecting through debate and discussion sessions. They were both 19 when they met, according to a 2022 GQ profile.

Their relationship wasn't entirely continuous. They broke up at one point before eventually reconnecting, and Roberts later remained beside Ocasio-Cortez as her career moved from bartending and organizing to Congress and national political prominence.

In her GQ interview, Ocasio-Cortez reflected on just how dramatically their lives had changed. "For him to experience us dating when I was still working as a waitress and a bartender through now," she said, the experience had been "very eye-opening" for Roberts.

When Did Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Riley Roberts Get Engaged?

Roberts proposed in Puerto Rico in April 2022, and Ocasio-Cortez publicly confirmed the engagement the following month. "It's true! Thank you all for the well wishes," she wrote at the time.

The couple wasn't immediately racing toward a wedding. "We got engaged last month in my family's hometown in Puerto Rico," Ocasio-Cortez said after the proposal, adding, "No future details yet, we're taking some space to savor this time before diving into planning."

Later that year, she offered an unusually personal look at their relationship in GQ. "I feel like I won the men lottery in my life," she said.

She also described Roberts as supportive of her increasingly public and demanding career. "He has been so supportive and willing and deeply engaging," Ocasio-Cortez told GQ. "He's not a witness to this." Instead, she said, Roberts used their experiences as opportunities for his own personal growth.

Riley Roberts Mostly Stayed Out of the Spotlight

Roberts maintained a remarkably low profile considering the level of attention surrounding his fiancée. He appeared in the 2019 documentary Knock Down the House, which chronicled Ocasio-Cortez's groundbreaking congressional campaign. Behind the scenes, he also helped with her digital advertising strategy.

His approach to Ocasio-Cortez's fame was deliberately understated. "When the camera is on her, he steps out of the way," a friend, Raul Fernandez, told Vanity Fair in 2020.

That privacy continued even after their engagement, which may help explain why reports of their separation surfaced long after the relationship apparently ended.

AOC's Egg-Freezing Journey Renewed Interest in Her Relationship

Questions about Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts intensified after the 36-year-old congresswoman began publicly discussing her decision to freeze her eggs in August 2026.

She documented parts of the fertility process on social media and said she had been saving for it for "a very long time."

When asked whether her fiancé supported her decision, Ocasio-Cortez did not specifically mention Roberts, instead saying that "all of my loved ones have been very supportive."

She has also made clear that she views the conversation as bigger than her own family plans. "We are not prepared for our own lives," she said while discussing women's experiences with puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause and decisions about whether to have biological children.

Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that publicly discussing fertility carries a particular risk for a woman with a high-profile political career. "People don't go down those rabbit holes and fixate on them for men," she said of the way family-planning questions can become intertwined with perceptions of female political candidates.

HOLA! USA interviewed six fertility specialists who said egg freezing can be an important family-building tool, but it is not a guarantee of pregnancy later. Timing, age, ovarian reserve, the number of eggs frozen, sperm quality, and the experience of the fertility laboratory can all influence the outcome.
