Nearly 30 years after one of Hollywood's most talked-about whirlwind romances, Carmen Electra is looking back on her marriage to Dennis Rodman with honesty and a healthy dose of perspective.
© GettyIn an interview with US Weekly, the actress and model didn't sugarcoat her feelings while reflecting on their relationship, admitting there are things she would have done differently.
"I could definitely say marrying Dennis Rodman could have been, like, not the best choice," Electra said while promoting her new show Nation’s Dumbest.
Although their relationship remains one of the most unforgettable celebrity romances of the late 1990s, Electra said the challenges extended far beyond the headlines.
© Getty"It was just difficult because he had people working for him that at that time were really weird, and they assumed that everyone was out for his money," she explained. "And I had my own money. I wasn't out for Dennis Rodman's money."
Electra made it clear she had already built a successful career before the pair tied the knot in Las Vegas in November 1998.
"By that time, I had been working with MTV, Baywatch... I was working a lot. I was living in a really nice condo in Beverly Hills at the time that I paid for," she recalled. "Independent queen. I believe in that. I think that honestly, you've got to look at life that way."
© GettyBy the time they met, Electra had become one of the biggest television stars, while Rodman was at the height of his fame as the colorful NBA superstar known as much for his larger-than-life personality as his success on the court.
Their romance moved quickly. The couple famously married during a spontaneous Las Vegas ceremony in 1998 before separating less than a year later.
Despite its short-lived nature, their relationship became one of pop culture's defining romances of the era, fueled by constant tabloid attention and their larger-than-life public personas.
Over the years, Electra has spoken candidly about how grief also shaped that period of her life. Before meeting Rodman, she experienced the devastating losses of both her mother and older sister within weeks of each other, later admitting that she was completely "numb" searching for joy.
© Getty"Right after my mom and sister died, I flew to Las Vegas and Dennis, and I got married. I guess I was trying to cling to whatever I had. I’d lost my mom and my sister; I didn’t want to lose anyone else," she told Glamour.
“He was such a fun person to be around, and we went out every night. I remember thinking, this is my out. I’m just going to have fun, and I’m not going to worry about anything," she said.
© GettyWhile their relationship was passionate, it was also tumultuous. In past interviews, Electra has described the marriage as filled with incredible highs and equally painful lows: “Our relationship was very passionate. When it was good, it was amazing,” she said in 2014. “And when it was bad, it was the worst."
Rodman has since moved on with his girlfriend, rapper Yella Yella. As for Electra, she's been living the single life but has expressed in the past that she wanted to try to date and find love in 2026.
