Ariana Grande is stepping away from the spotlight after months of intense public discussion surrounding her appearance, as a separate development involving her latest music video has reignited conversations about body image and social media responsibility.

The Grammy-winning singer has confirmed she will take a break from public-facing work after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, citing relentless public scrutiny. At the same time, Instagram has placed a community note on her latest "Petal" music video warning viewers that the content discusses body image and eating disorders.

Why Is Ariana Grande Taking a Hiatus?

According to Grande's representative, the singer plans to step back from public appearances after the final stop of her Eternal Sunshine Tour in London on September 1. The decision also means she will no longer appear in the upcoming West End revival of Sunday in the Park With George, where she had been scheduled to star alongside Jonathan Bailey, as informed by AP News.

Her team said Grande wants to finish her tour on a positive note before taking a well-deserved break from the constant attention that has surrounded both her career and her personal life.

Instagram Adds Eating Disorder Community Note

Another development that has drawn attention is Instagram's decision to place a community note on posts featuring Grande's new "Petal" music video.

Users viewing the content are presented with a notice stating that the story discusses body image and eating disorders before accessing the video. While Meta has not publicly commented on the specific moderation decision, similar informational notices are designed to alert viewers when content touches on potentially sensitive topics.

The label appeared after widespread online discussions about Grande's appearance following the video's release.

Fans React to the "Petal" Music Video

Since the video debuted, social media has been filled with comments expressing concern about Grande's noticeably slimmer appearance.

Social media has been filled with comments expressing concern about Grande's noticeably slimmer appearance.

Many fans defended the singer, arguing that speculation about someone's health based solely on appearance is inappropriate. Others voiced concern while insisting their comments came from a place of care.

The conversation quickly spread across platforms, with public figures and body image advocates weighing in on the broader issue of discussing celebrities' bodies online. “I think it’s interesting that she was already incredibly thin when she decided to do a video telling everyone that she was extremely healthy and then she’s lost like 30 pounds since that. Most people with EDs want people to think there is some other reason for their extreme thinness but it’s obvious. And we all need to be having conversations with our tweens and teens about how dangerous her ED is,” a person said.

“it’s anorexia, she’s showing how it was triggered. i feel like it’s so obvious. people making it a spectacle are ableist. anorexia nervosa is the deadliest mental illness. we are in an empathy crisis tbh, this should all be common sense,” another added.

A third chimed in saying: “I think the fact that people are defending her, saying she’s healthy, she’s adult and she can do whatever she wants is completely enabling this behavior. No one should ever make comments about people’s body, however, it’s truly a disservice to ignore what’s happening here. I’d want people to step in and help me. The fact that she is touring has this new album instead of getting help is beyond concerning.”

Ariana Grande Has Spoken About Body Comments Before

This is not the first time Grande has addressed public commentary about her appearance.

Over the past several years, she has repeatedly urged fans to avoid making assumptions about someone's health based on how they look. She previously explained that a period many people considered her "healthiest" was actually one of the most difficult times in her life.

More recently, her new music has reflected those experiences, with songs on Petal exploring the emotional impact of constant judgment and life under public scrutiny.

The Bigger Conversation About Celebrity Body Image

Mental health experts say situations like this demonstrate the complicated relationship between celebrity culture and social media. Even comments framed as concern can contribute to harmful conversations around body image and eating disorders, especially when they focus heavily on someone's appearance without any confirmed medical information.

Experts quoted in recent coverage say repeated speculation may also affect fans who struggle with body image, reinforcing unrealistic beauty standards and encouraging unhealthy comparisons. “Concern trolling is unhelpful, no matter what size the person’s body is. It’s judgement in disguise, and is usually not really about health at all,” Jemma Haythorne, who is a body image speaker and educator, told news.com.au. “The mental health impacts of concern trolling are great, which negates any true ‘concern’ about health that the commenter may claim.”

What's Next for Ariana Grande?

Grande is expected to complete the remaining dates of her Eternal Sunshine Tour before beginning an indefinite break from public-facing work.

Her representatives emphasized that the hiatus is intended to allow her to prioritize her well-being after an extended period of intense media attention. Although she is stepping away from public appearances, previously completed projects, including upcoming film work, are still expected to move forward.

“Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour,” a rep told People. “She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny,” the representative continues. “This tour has been a beautiful experience for her. She loves her fans and has loved every minute of this tour so much.”
