Matthew McConaughey is celebrating the birthday of one of his closest friends and collaborators. He's also poking fun at one of Hollywood's best celebrity rumors: that of him and Woody Harrelson possibly being brothers.
© FilmMagicMcConaughey shared a post on Instagram showing him and Harrelson from some years ago. The image shows the two as younger men, smiling for the camera, with Harrelson having one arm wrapped around McConaughey.
"From another mother? Happy birthday brother," McConaughey wrote.
The rumors poke fun at a story that McConaughey once told about his mom, Kay. “We’re all sitting around in Greece one night talking and my mom out of nowhere in a little pause goes, ‘Oh, I knew your dad, Woody...,’" said McConaughey to Vanity Fair.

And what was the knew about?’ And she goes, ‘Just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough.’ And we all went, ‘What? What, are you going to leave it there?’ Now we gotta go do some DNA tests.”
The two have continued to joke about the story through the years. In an appearance on Stephen Colbert, Harrelson said that if the two are brothers, it would be “a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.”

The series pokes fun at these rumors, using them for inspiration: the actors play fictionalized versions of themselves, with their friendship put to the test after they learn they might be brothers.
"After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. But what begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret that the two friends might actually be brothers," reads the plot description, provided by Apple TV.
The ensemble cast includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and more.
