Tributes have also poured in from Grimsby Town Football Club, where Alex Hughes served as Player Recruitment Lead.
"Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is devastated to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of our Player Recruitment Lead, Alex Hughes," the club said in a statement. The club described Hughes as "a devoted husband, proud father, beloved son, brother and friend, and a highly valued member of the Grimsby Town family."
The club also highlighted Hughes' contributions behind the scenes. "Alex joined the Mariners in 2025 and quickly became a respected and highly valued member of the Club. Working closely with David Artell and the football department, he played a key role in shaping the Club's recruitment strategy and supporting the continued development of the men's first team."
Before arriving at Grimsby Town, Hughes worked in performance analysis, player recruitment, and player representation. His career included positions with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, and Morecambe, where he earned a reputation as a dedicated professional with a deep knowledge of the game.
Colleagues also remembered him for his character and warmth.
The club also paid tribute to Hughes' character and impact on those around him.

They also asked for privacy as the family grieves. “The Club respectfully asks that Alex’s family’s privacy be respected as they come to terms with their loss. Rest in peace, Alex. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner.”
Born During Mark Hughes' Barcelona Spell
Alex Hughes was born in 1987 while his father was playing for FC Barcelona. Although Mark Hughes spent only one season with the Spanish club, he enjoyed his greatest success with Manchester United and also played for Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
After retiring, Hughes moved into management, beginning with the Welsh national team before later taking charge of Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, and Fulham.
Since 2025, he has managed Carlisle United, which competes in England’s fifth tier.
While Alex never pursued a career as a player or coach, he remained deeply involved in the sport, building a respected career in recruitment, analysis, and football operations.
