Vera Wang is living proof that age, beauty, and fashion standards should be thrown away. At 76, she wears outfits women half her age wouldn’t even think of, and she looks incredible while doing so. This week, the legendary designer turned heads at the Fragrance Foundation Awards in New York City, stepping onto the red carpet in one of her boldest outfits yet.
Wang showed off her slim physique and commanding aura, rocking her own collection of course: a black bra-style top paired with a dramatically low-rise skirt featuring cutout details at the waist, and pastel blue opera gloves.
The designer also rocked one of her favorite accessories: sunglasses. In some shots, she posed behind a pair of oversized black shades.
In others, she removed them entirely. It's a fashion move that has become something of a signature for Wang, who has openly described herself as a longtime collector and admirer of eyewear.
"It's so creative, so personal," Wang said in a 2021 interview with 20/20 Magazine. "For people to be able to transform themselves and enjoy their own creativity and experiment, I just think it's such a fun thing."
The designer's love of sunglasses even sparked a viral moment earlier this year. While attending the Figure Skating in Harlem Igniting the Dream Gala, Wang jokingly removed her shades while posing for photographers and quipped, "I do both, I'm not Anna Wintour."
Before heading to the event, Wang shared photos of the look on social media with the caption, "ALL GUSSIED UP."
Fans immediately flooded the comments, with some comparing her to Audrey Hepburn while others marveled at how she continues to rewrite expectations around age and fashion.
For Vera, age is just a number
Wang will turn 77 in just a few days on June 27. In 2020, Wang opened up about her impact on ideas surrounding age, telling PEOPLE, “I guess it’s just that people have an idea of what 70 looks like today. I have so many friends who are 65 to 70 that look fabulous," she said. "But I have to say that hopefully, it’s a good thing. I hope it makes women feel more comfortable with themselves, or be confident, or there are many definitions of what a woman can be."
Whether she's wearing couture, platform boots, or a look that sends social media into a frenzy, Wang continues to prove she's more interested in self-expression than age expectations. Just last month, she made headlines at the Met Gala in another midriff-baring ensemble.
Days before that, she went viral in a silky, champagne-colored gown at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Hot Pink Party.
How to age like Vera
And if fans are still searching for the secret behind her seemingly ageless confidence, Wang has given a somewhat hilarious range of advice.
"I think work is a great deterrent," she recently told E! News. "It keeps you occupied mentally and physically. It keeps you engaged."
She's also encouraged people to rethink the way they view aging altogether. "Birthdays should be celebrated and treasured," Wang said. "If you get to this stage, you're really lucky."
Of course, her famously candid lifestyle advice includes some chaos. When Wang’s abs went viral in 2020, after a fan asked her for her routine, she responded, "work, sleep, a vodka cocktail, not much sun.”
She’s admitted to regularly ordering McDonald's. “I order it every day, like two weeks on it, and then I’ll change,” she told Page Six in 2023.
