Leave it to the NBA finals to create a controversy between two of Hollywood's strongest besties. After being accused of making a dig at Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez is clearing the air.
The Texas native star found herself at the center of unexpected drama this week thanks to her loyalty to the San Antonio Spurs. Gomez has been cheering the team on throughout the series, and following the team's Game Four loss, she shared a throwback photo of herself at a Spurs game and admitted her "heart breaks just a lil," before congratulating New York on the win.
She went on to joke after the loss that it was "so funny how some are all of a sudden fans though lol."
So when fans noticed she commented "lol" on an MTV Instagram post featuring Swift and actress Mariska Hargitay celebrating the New York Knicks' Game 4 win, all hell broke loose.
People were convinced that she was throwing shade at Swift, and it wasn't just people on the internet. Gomez woke up to texts about it. The "Love Song" singer shared a photo with text on her Instagram story that read, "Woke up and was sent so many texts."
"I would never insult my friends, nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page," she said.
She went on to explain that the post had nothing to do with Swift at all. According to Gomez, she had made a bet with friends during the NBA Finals and was jokingly reacting to people in her own group chat after losing.
"I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends," she explained. "Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise."
Swift has become a familiar face at Knicks games and was just at a game in May with her soon-to-be husband. But her recent appearance still sparked a separate debate online, with some questioning why the Pennsylvania-born pop star supports the New York team.
So while the sports fans going after Swift is nothing new, Gomez roasting Swift would be kind of wild. The two have been friends for nearly two decades after first meeting in 2008 when they were both dating members of the Jonas Brothers.
Since then, they've supported each other through career milestones, heartbreaks, award shows, and public scrutiny, becoming one of Hollywood's longest-lasting celebrity friendships.
Swift was by Gomez's side at her wedding, and she will soon reciprocate the favor. While one of Swift's former besties - Blake Lively- is reportedly not getting an invite, it's safe to say Gomez is probably still on the list after her cheeky post.
