Camila Giorgi, one of the most interesting tennis players, is coming back. The Italian-born athlete's story has everything from tax fraud and lingerie modeling to theft allegations. She last played tennis at the Miami Open in March 2024, and now, after disappearing from the sport, she casually announced she's making a return.
According to DailyMail, Giorgi confirmed this week in an Instagram Q&A that she plans to return to the WTA circuit. Giorgi has over 691k followers on Instagram. During the live show, someone asked: "Will you come back to tournament tennis in the future?" She responded, "Yes, in 2027."
She doubled down when someone asked, "Are you sure you’ll come back to play on the WTA circuit? And if so, when?" "Yes, in 2027," she assured. Her announcement comes after she announced in March that she's opening tennis camps in Mallorca, Spain.
"Expect intense training, good vibes, lots of tennis… and maybe a few tough sessions too," she wrote. "I’ll be on court with you, sharing my experience from the tour and helping you push your game to the next level."
Who is Giorgi?
Giorgi built her career on power and unpredictability. At her peak, she reached No. 26 in the world and had her biggest moment at the Canadian Open, beating Karolína Plíšková in straight sets.
Then, in May 2024, she just stopped, landing on the retired list after her last match at the Miami Open.
What followed was a bunch of chaos. First, there was the idea that she left for modeling. She had already been doing fashion and lingerie work on the side, so people thought it all made sense.
Then it escalated. Reports out of Italy claimed there were issues with her taxes and that she had left the country while authorities were looking into gaps in her filings.
It continued when a landlord in Tuscany claimed months of unpaid rent and alleged that thousands of euros' worth of items like furniture had been taken from the property. Around the same time, there were reports that both she and her father, who also coached her, were being looked at in connection with financial issues.
She denied everything and said she’d been wanting to step away for years, that the sport had burned her out, and that the timing had nothing to do with the headlines.
On the Italian chat show Verissimo in October 2024, she said the news about the rent and theft "made her laugh." As for the taxes, she explained, "My family did not know about them." "They were created by outside people who managed me."
Earlier this year, Giorgi quietly got married to tennis player-turned-coach Andreas Ignacio Pasutti, just two days after revealing she was pregnant with a video of her ultrasound, per DailyMail. They revealed on a TV program, Verissimo, in March that they are expecting a boy.
