Long before luxury resorts arrived, Miches was a small coastal community with deep ties to the sea. Its origins date back to fishermen from El Seibo who settled along these shores centuries ago. In 1936, the town officially adopted the name Miches in honor of Dominican General Eugenio Miches. International attention, however, wouldn't come until decades later.
In the 1980s, Swiss travelers discovered Playa Esmeralda and were among the first to recognize the extraordinary potential of its untouched coastline. That early promise began to take shape in 2019 with the opening of Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, the area's first luxury resort. A year later, Promiches was established as a partnership between investors and tourism operators committed to sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, and long-term planning.
The Future of Luxury Travel
Located in the province of El Seibo, Miches is home to more than 30 miles of coastline, where pristine beaches, mangroves, lagoons, rivers, mountains, and tropical forests create one of the Caribbean's best-preserved natural landscapes. Just over an hour from Punta Cana International Airport, the destination offers easy access while preserving the sense of seclusion that's increasingly rare in the region.

The opening of Club Med marked the beginning of a new chapter. Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Wyndham, and Four Seasons Resort & Residences Miches soon followed, with the Four Seasons property scheduled to open in 2027.
Meliá Hotels International has also announced plans to join the destination's expansion. When many of the world's leading hospitality companies invest in the same emerging market, it's a strong signal that its potential is only beginning to be recognized.

Miches has secured more than $1 billion in committed investment and is expected to have over 3,000 hotel rooms across projects that are either operating or under development, while also creating thousands of direct jobs for the local community. During the presentation, Dominican Republic Tourism Minister David Collado emphasized that Miches’ growth is the result of a shared vision between the public and private sectors.
Love of Nature
Despite its rapid growth, Miches' greatest asset remains its extraordinary natural beauty. The destination is part of the Banco de la Plata and La Navidad Marine Mammal Sanctuary, one of the Caribbean's most important protected ecosystems.
© CourtesyBetween January and March, humpback whales migrate through its waters, joining manatees, leatherback sea turtles, sprawling mangrove forests, and an impressive diversity of marine life. Visitors can also explore Playa Esmeralda, Montaña Redonda, Laguna Limón, Laguna Redonda, Los Haitises National Park, and Salto La Jalda, one of the Caribbean's tallest waterfalls.
Hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, water sports, and immersive cacao and coconut experiences offer travelers a deeper connection to the region's nature, culture, and traditions.
