Rosalía is continuing to unpack the emotional layers of her past during her LUX era. More than two years after her highly publicized breakup from Rauw Alejandro, the Spanish superstar is speaking candidly about heartbreak, disillusionment, and the moments that reshaped her views on love and masculinity, all as she prepares to release the music video for her song 'Sauvignon Blanc' this week.
During a recent appearance on the Special People Club podcast, Rosalía revealed the most disappointing thing a man has ever done to her, recounting an experience that left a lasting mark on her. The singer described an emotionally distant former boyfriend, calling him “a bit Morse code, emotionally,” and recalled a painful encounter shortly after their breakup.
“We were together for a few years and we broke up,” she said. “But a week after the breakup, we relapsed and got together again. While we’re in the situation you can imagine, at a certain moment he lets go of me and says, ‘How I’ve missed my wh--e.’”
Rosalía said she froze when she heard the comment. “Once I was able to react, I got up and left and never returned,” she added, describing the moment as a definitive end to the relationship.
The revelation adds new context to LUX, Rosalía’s fourth studio album, which explores themes of purity, spiritual renewal, and womanhood. Throughout the record, she references fractured trust and emotional manipulation, singing about figures she’s described as an “emotional terrorist” and a “national heartbreaker,” lyrics many fans believe point to her past relationship with Rauw Alejandro.
In a recent interview with Le Monde, Rosalía also reflected on the symbolism behind the album, citing “holy women” throughout history as inspiration, including Santa Rosalía, the patron saint of Palermo. “Santa Rosalía was a hermit, she canceled her wedding the day before,” the singer noted. “This coincidence is incredible.”
When pressed on the remark, Rosalía paused before responding, “It’s a long story. Better not talk about that.” The comment reignited speculation among fans that the singer may have walked away from her own wedding plans at the last possible moment.
Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro announced their engagement in March 2023 in the video for “Beso,” one of three songs from their joint EP 'RR.' Months earlier, she had confirmed on Spanish talk show El Hormiguero that she already had her wedding dress, a custom Vivienne Westwood gown, safely stored until after her tour.
But the wedding never happened. In July 2023, the couple confirmed their breakup, with Rauw publicly denying infidelity rumors. Rosalía later thanked fans for respecting their privacy, saying only that she loved and admired him.
Now, firmly rooted in her LUX era, Rosalía appears focused on transformation rather than closure. The album’s visuals, including the dreamlike imagery in “Berghain,” and the forthcoming “Sauvignon Blanc” music video suggest a continued exploration of rebirth, release, and emotional freedom, themes that resonate even more deeply as she continues to share her truth.
