Matty Healy, frontman of The 1975 and ex-boyfriend of Taylor Swift, appeared to throw subtle shade at the pop superstar during his set at the Glastonbury Festival in England.
While performing Friday night at Worthy Farm in Somerset, Healy paused to address the crowd and made a bold declaration. “What this moment is making me realize is that I probably am the best,” he said, as seen in a video shared by Variety on X.
“I’m probably the best songwriter of my generation,” he added, raising a glass of beer. “The best, what do we say — A POET — ladies and gentlemen, is what I am.”
Though Healy, 36, didn’t mention Swift by name, many interpreted the comments as a not-so-subtle reference to her 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department—a project widely speculated to include multiple tracks inspired by their brief relationship. Healy went on to refer to himself as a “Generational wordsmith,” reinforcing the idea that he was taking a swipe at Swift’s poetic branding.
Healy and Swift, 35, had a whirlwind romance between May and June 2023, shortly after her breakup with longtime partner Joe Alwyn. During their time together, the two were often seen side-by-side. Healy attended several of Swift’s sold-out Eras Tour shows, and the pair were frequently spotted in New York City, including visits to the Electric Lady recording studio.
Sources also told Page Six that the couple was seen getting cozy at Casa Cipriani alongside friends Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley.
Their relationship ended just a month later, reportedly due to conflicting schedules and differences in compatibility. An insider told Entertainment Tonight that the split stemmed from “incompatibility and scheduling issues.”
When Swift dropped TTPD in April 2024, several songs—including “Guilty As Sin,” “Down Bad,” “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus,” “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”—were rumored to be about Healy. According to Us Weekly, the singer was “blindsided” by the album.
Swift has since moved on with NFL star Travis Kelce, with their relationship going strong through the summer of 2024.
Meanwhile, Healy announced his engagement to model Gabbriette Bechtel in June 2024.
