Halle Berry's son already led a commitment ceremony for her and Van Hunt, but when it comes to a real wedding, she has some reservations. In their first joint interview, the singer revealed that he has already proposed to the famous actress, who has yet to give a response.
Berry and Hunt sat down with Today with Jenna & Friends, when the 58-year-old spilled the tea. “I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see," he said. Hoping to get some help, he explained, "It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
As for why Berry hasn't said yes, she pointed to their past marriages. “I’ve been married three times. Van has been married once,” she said. “We don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t.”
After her marriages to David Justice, Eric Benét, and Olivier Martinez, Berry has earned the right to take her time and to question whether marriage is necessary at all.
Still, she’s not completely opposed to saying “I do” again. “I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” the Cat Woman star said. “It’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.”
Their commitment ceremony
Even if the legal part hasn’t happened yet, someone very important in Berry’s life has already made it official. Her 8-year-old son, Maceo, from her marriage to Martinez, spontaneously led a “commitment ceremony” for the couple in the backseat of a car.
"I think he finally sees me happy, and it’s infectious. It was his way of saying, ‘This is good. I like this. This makes me happy,” she shared in a 2022 interview with AARP. Both she and Van teared up. “It was a very real moment for all of us.”
Berry says she fell for Hunt during the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 before they even met in person. “I fell in love with his mind, his conversation,” she said. Plus, Berry has already said Hunt is "her person."
Hunt also has a son of his own, and Berry called them a “modern family.” “I have two children with two different fathers. Van has a son. As a mom living in this modern, blended family, all I care about is that my kids are OK with the decisions I’m making,” she told the outlet.
So while Van Hunt’s proposal may still be “floating,” it seems Berry has already given her heart. And thanks to a thoughtful 8-year-old officiant in the backseat of a car, they’ve already had a ceremony that matters more than most.
