The royal family is entering a new era on screen. The hit Dutch drama Máxima has unveiled the new actors stepping into the roles of Queen Máxima, King Willem-Alexander and their three daughters, Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, offering the first glimpse at the royal family viewers will follow in the highly anticipated third season.

Natali Anna will take over the title role as Queen Máxima, while Ruben Brinkman will portray King Willem-Alexander. The new season will also bring the couple's three daughters further into the story, with Rosa van Leeuwen playing Princess Amalia, Fiene Mooij portraying Princess Alexia and Charlotte Kampinga taking on the role of Princess Ariane.

The newly released cast portraits show the five actors together as the on-screen royal family, with individual images introducing the new Máxima, Willem-Alexander and princesses.

The casting marks a major transition for the popular series. Delfina Chaves and Martijn Lakemeier portrayed Máxima and Willem-Alexander during the first two seasons, chronicling the couple's relationship and Máxima's transformation from an Argentine woman living abroad into a central member of the Dutch royal family.

Season 3, however, jumps significantly forward in time. Videoland previously announced that the next installment will explore the first ten years of Willem-Alexander's reign, beginning a new chapter following his 2013 inauguration as king. With the story moving approximately 15 years ahead, producers opted for a new generation of actors to portray the royals.

The time jump also means Amalia, Alexia and Ariane will have a much more prominent presence. Rather than appearing primarily as the young daughters of the future king and queen, the princesses are now old enough for the series to explore the changing dynamics of a royal household raising three children in the public eye.

Producer Rachel van Bommel previously teased the possibilities created by the new era, explaining that the third season will explore how Willem-Alexander and Máxima navigate their roles as king and queen alongside their other responsibilities and their growing children.

The wider royal family has also been recast. Teun Luijkx will portray Prince Constantijn, Carolien Spoor will play Princess Laurentien and Sophie van Winden will step into the role of Princess Mabel.

The change comes after an eventful second season that took the story from Máxima and Willem-Alexander's 2002 wedding through his accession to the throne in 2013.

Along the way, the series dramatized some of the most recognizable moments in the family's recent history, including the births of Amalia, Alexia and Ariane, the 2009 attack in Apeldoorn, Prince Friso's devastating skiing accident and Queen Beatrix's eventual abdication.

The second season also shifted the focus toward Máxima's struggle to balance love, motherhood, royal protocol and her own ambitions as she prepared for life as queen.

Now, the series is entering territory that will feel considerably more familiar to royal watchers. Willem-Alexander became king on April 30, 2013, meaning the new storyline is expected to bring the drama much closer to the modern Dutch royal family audiences recognize today.

The ambitious recasting comes as Máxima continues to build an audience far beyond the Netherlands. The series has been sold internationally to dozens of territories, with producer Millstreet Films announcing earlier this year that it had reached more than 85 countries.

Season 3 therefore won't simply introduce another chapter in Máxima's story. It will introduce an entirely new royal family on screen, with Amalia, Alexia and Ariane becoming an increasingly important part of the story as the drama moves into the modern reign of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. A premiere date for the third season has yet to be announced.
