The world's largest sporting event has officially begun. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest of its kind, and kicked off in the US, Mexico and Canada with 48 teams and 104 matches to be played in the coming month. Members of the royal families of the representing teams have made their arrangements to be a part of the historic occasion, making their plans to watch their country's debut and their ensuing matches.

Together the group watched the Netherlands and Japan game, which concluded with an exciting 2-2 result and served as one of the most exciting games of the tournament thus far.
Representing their team's flags
The game coincided with the Japanese couple's state visit to the Netherlands.
In photos shared on their official social media profiles, the foursome was seen wearing their team's colors as they watched the games on television. Photos shared by Dutch royals show the group in a room decorated with a large chimney, various sofas and a TV set. Mambo, Princess Amalia's adorable dog, also made an appearance, being spotted in the background of one of the images. He was seen adorably seated on one of the couches, located near King Willem.

A relationship that dates back 500 years
The Emperor's visit to the Netherlands celebrates nearly 500 years of diplomatic relationships between the two nations. In the state visit, representatives from both countries are expected to discuss numerous issues, among them the economical and security goals that both states wish to grow and improve upon.
Japan is an important business partner for the Netherlands, with the two nations collaborating on various tech and lifestyle tools, among them microchips, horticulture innovations, and more.
© koninklijkhuisThe visit is scheduled until June 19th, with the Japanese couple's schedule including a welcome at Dam Square in Amsterdam and a state banquet that evening that will be attended by two of Queen Maxima and King Willem's daughters: Princess Amalia and Princess Ariane.
Maxima and Masako, friends
One element worth noting is the friendship that has blossomed over the years between Maxima and Masako. According to reports made by local outlets, Masako faced some pressure to have a male son and heir, resulting in a reported "adjustment disorder" that kept her away from the official duties of the Imperial court for years. Royal watchers and reporters claim that Maxima supported Masako through this time, with the Dutch family being especially accommodating during Masako's visits.
In 2013, Maxima invited Masako to her coronation ceremony.
