An especially busy June on the international royal calendar begins this Monday. Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco will arrive in Madrid for a two-day official visit marking the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Spain and Monaco, as well as the growing presence of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in Spain.
The itinerary includes official meetings, a flagship event at Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden attended by King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and a historic milestone: Princess Charlene’s first official visit to Spain as Princess of Monaco.
150 Years of Relations Between Spain and Monaco: Princess Charlene’s Historic First Official Trip to Madrid
The anniversary of diplomatic relations between Monaco and Spain has been celebrated throughout the year. The Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Monte-Carlo Ballet have toured numerous Spanish cities, while Café de Paris in Monaco has hosted culinary events showcasing traditional Spanish products and recipes. All of this commemorates the establishment of Monaco’s first official diplomatic mission to Spain on July 14, 1876.
The highlight of these celebrations is undoubtedly Prince Albert and Princess Charlene’s official visit to Madrid, a two-day trip that also marks the launch of the Spanish branch of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Although it is not a state visit, it will be remembered as Princess Charlene’s first official trip to Spain in her role as Princess of Monaco.
Given how carefully Her Serene Highness manages her international schedule, this two-day visit to Madrid is something of a rarity. Until now, it had always been Prince Albert who traveled to Spain alone for sporting, cultural, or environmental engagements. In that sense, this trip, fifteen years after their wedding, represents a historic milestone in the history of visits to Spain by Monaco’s royal women.
It is worth remembering that Prince Albert’s parents, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, made several visits and vacations to Spain in the late 1960s. Later, Princess Caroline of Monaco served as First Lady and represented both the Principality and the Grimaldi family at the wedding of the then Prince and Princess of Asturias, Felipe and Letizia.
June 1: A Day Highlighting the Diplomatic Nature of the Visit and Spain’s Recognition of Monaco’s Head of State
Early Monday afternoon, Monaco’s sovereign will arrive at Zarzuela Palace for a working meeting with King Felipe VI. During the meeting, the two heads of state will discuss matters of mutual interest before sharing a private lunch. From there, Prince Albert will travel to Moncloa Palace for an official audience with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Later in the day, unless plans change or she is seen making a private visit around the capital, Princess Charlene is expected to take part in the only official event currently confirmed on her schedule: the centerpiece of the visit. The princely couple will visit Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden alongside King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
Founded in the 18th century during the reign of King Charles III, the garden houses significant botanical collections and plays a vital role in biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and environmental awareness, an issue that has long been a priority for Prince Albert and one to which his foundation devotes much of its work.
Why Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden Is One of the Visit’s Key Venues
The King and Queen of Spain and the Prince and Princess of Monaco will then tour two exhibitions at the Villanueva Pavilion, organized by the Embassy of Monaco in Spain and open to the public from May 28 through June 13.
The first exhibition, titled Monaco and Spain: Five Centuries of Shared History, was created in collaboration with the Archives of the Prince’s Palace and offers a retrospective of the historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The second exhibition, part of the 8th Monaco Artists Forum, highlights the richness and diversity of artistic creation in Monaco. Initiated by the Princely Government and organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the exhibition brings together Monegasque and resident artists, both professional and amateur, to present a broad overview of the Principality’s artistic scene.
Tuesday, June 2: Innovation, Talent, and Academic Cooperation
On Tuesday, Prince Albert will attend several events on his own to mark the 10th anniversary of the Spanish branch of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, which is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
The day, centered on collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing, will include a visit to IE University, where Monaco’s head of state will deliver the only speech scheduled during the trip before a conference titled Leading the Future Through Collaboration: Talent, Innovation, and Opportunity.
The theme reflects a shared ambition: fostering the emergence of committed talent and harnessing innovation to drive sustainable solutions for future generations.
