Queen Letizia and King Felipe of Spain's younger daughter is nearing the end of her studies in Wales. Infanta Sofia is set to graduate from UWC Atlantic later this month. According to the school's calendar, the last day for second year students and Leavers' celebrations is scheduled for Saturday, May 24.
Sofia has been studying at UWC Atlantic since 2023. Months after her older sister, Princess Leonor, graduated from the same school in the UK, Sofia arrived to begin her International Baccalaureate program. The program is “designed to evolve students into emerging leaders who understand that change is possible through dialogue, action and a determination to make situations better - locally, nationally and globally,” per the school’s website.
Sofia and her parents were all present for Leonor's Leavers Ceremony back in 2023, during which a teacher told the future Queen of Spain: “Leonor, your love of meaningful conversations knows no bounds. Your unwavering passion for learning, understanding people, and exploring diverse perspectives has truly enriched your UWC experience. We will miss your humor.” Leonor, 19, is now currently in her second year of military training.
While Sofia followed in her sister's footsteps in attending UWC Atlantic, it's been reported that she won't be undergoing military training like Leonor, who is first in line to the throne. HOLA! Spain previously reported that the King and Queen's second child considered joining the army and taking a helicopter pilot course, but has ultimately decided to pursue a university degree. Sources close to the family told HOLA! Spain that the idea is for Sofia to go to a university abroad, probably in the U.S. She has reportedly applied to several schools, one of which is believed to be in Washington. Her father Felipe studied at the Autónoma University of Madrid, while her mother Letizia obtained her bachelor's degree from the Complutense University of Madrid.
Sofia celebrated her 18th birthday on Tuesday, April 29. To commemorate the occasion, the Spanish Royal Household released a series of previously unseen photos of the teen that were taken on the grounds of Zarzuela Palace. Per HOLA! Spain, those close to Sofia have said, "She lives life, has an infectious joy, and is pure empathy," adding, "She is affectionate and sensitive. She has been raised to be able to defend herself in any situation, cope well with adversity, and know how to take care of herself."
