New York City is expanding the way it communicates with millions of Spanish-speaking residents by launching a new WhatsApp channel and relaunching its Spanish-language Instagram account, creating a centralized hub for government updates, community resources, and public safety information.

The initiative, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, aims to meet residents where they already spend their time online while making City Hall information easier to access in Spanish. The move reflects the city's effort to simplify communication by bringing updates from multiple agencies into one place, as informed by NBC New York.

Why WhatsApp to Communicate with the Hispanic communities in New York City?

Choosing WhatsApp is a strategic decision. The messaging platform is one of the most widely used communication apps among Hispanic communities in New York City, making it an effective way for local government to reach residents directly on their mobile devices.

Rather than requiring people to monitor multiple agency websites or social media pages, the city plans to deliver important updates through a single channel in Spanish.

Mayor Mamdani: Government Should Speak the Language Residents Use

Announcing the new initiative, Mayor Mamdani emphasized the importance of communicating with New Yorkers in the language they use at home. "Every New Yorker deserves to know what their city is doing for them in the language they speak at home," Mamdani said.

He added that Spanish-speaking residents are already active on WhatsApp and Instagram, making those platforms the right place for City Hall to share updates. Mamdani also said residents should not have to search through numerous government agencies to find essential information and that the new channels are designed to bring everything together in one location, delivered directly to their phones.

Spanish Instagram Account Returns With Expanded Resources

Alongside the WhatsApp launch, City Hall has relaunched its Spanish-language Instagram account to serve as another centralized source of information.

The account will include:

  • Updates on city services
  • Policy announcements
  • Plain-language explainers
  • Public safety information
  • Livestreams
  • Community event coverage

Previously, Spanish-speaking residents often needed to follow multiple city agency accounts to stay informed. The revamped Instagram account is designed to streamline that experience by gathering key updates under one profile.
