Whether you're a kitchen newbie or a seasoned chef, this guide will have you whipping up frijoles negros that'll make your taste buds dance.

Ingredients You'll Need

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, undrained
  • ½ to 1 cup water (as needed)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

  1. Sauté the Veggies: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and bell pepper, cooking until softened (about 5-7 minutes). Toss in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Add the Beans: Pour in the undrained black beans, water, bay leaves, cumin, oregano, and red wine vinegar. Stir everything together.
  3. Simmer Time: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally and add more water if needed to reach your desired consistency.
  4. Season to Taste: Remove the bay leaves. Season with salt and black pepper to your liking.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired. Serve hot over white rice or as a side to your favorite Cuban dishes.
