Over seven decades after Grace Kelly first appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s 'Rear Window', her granddaughter Camille Gottlieb revived the moment with a modern update.
At the 76th annual Red Cross Ball held in Monaco on July 12, Gottlieb, 27, paid tribute to her legendary grandmother by stepping out in a custom black-and-white gown inspired by Kelly’s unforgettable Edith Head-designed look from the 1954 film.
The Italian fashion house Elisabetta Franchi was behind the updated creation, which blended Old Hollywood elegance with contemporary flair.
“It’s an honor to pay homage to her this evening,” Gottlieb said in a behind-the-scenes Instagram video, where she reflected on being compared to Kelly since childhood.
“When I was little, I was often told I looked like my grandmother,” she added, calling it “one of the biggest compliments.” The gown closely mirrored the structure of Kelly’s original, consisting of a romantic off-the-shoulder neckline, ruched bodice, and full tulle skirt.
Gottlieb’s version featured silver floral embroidery, a high-leg slit, and a sculpted satin bodice. “Thanks to @elisabettafranchi, I was able to pay tribute to my grandmother with this beautiful dress,” Gottlieb captioned another Instagram post in French.
Camille completed the look with black heels, a sweeping updo, and a diamond Cartier choker featuring a leaf-shaped pendant, an understated nod to Kelly’s own love of classic jewelry.
Also in attendance were several family members, including Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, as well as Gottlieb’s half-brother Louis Ducruet and his wife Marie Chevallier, making the evening a deeply personal family affair.
Though she never met her grandmother, who died in 1982 following a tragic car accident, Camille has repeatedly shown she inherited not only Grace’s features but her timeless style. "I’ve seen all her films," she said before the event. "Her outfit in Alfred Hitchcock’s work is one of my favorites."
The gown that inspired it all has long been considered a hallmark of Kelly’s brief but powerful film career. Designed by costume legend Edith Head, the original Rear Window dress showcases the elegance of Lisa Fremont, Kelly’s character, and remains one of cinema’s most stunning fashion moments. In 2010, a sketch of the dress sold at Christie’s for nearly $10,000.
