Patrick Schwarzenegger and Leslie Grace are heading into the dangerous world of professional tennis in The Journeyman, a new crime thriller directed by Blue Beetle filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto. The upcoming film will explore the darker side of competitive sports, where financial desperation, illegal match-fixing, and dangerous criminal connections turn a promising athletic career into a fight for survival.

According to Deadline, Schwarzenegger will lead the movie as a struggling professional tennis player who becomes involved in an illegal match-fixing operation to provide for his family. Grace will portray his fiercely loyal fiancée, adding an emotional dimension to the high-stakes story.

AGC Studios is financing and producing the independent thriller, with filming scheduled to begin November 30, 2026, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What Is ‘The Journeyman’ About?

Unlike traditional sports dramas that focus on championship victories and inspirational comebacks, The Journeyman takes audiences into the criminal underworld surrounding professional tennis.

Schwarzenegger's character is a down-on-his-luck tennis professional struggling to make ends meet. When an opportunity to earn money through illegal match-fixing presents itself, he becomes entangled in a dangerous operation that threatens his career, relationships, and future.

What initially appears to be a way to solve his financial problems becomes something far more sinister.

The film's premise explores how desperation can push athletes toward decisions with devastating consequences. It also examines the vulnerability of professional players who compete outside the sport's highest-paid ranks.

Grace's character, described as a devoted fiancée, is expected to bring an important personal perspective to the story. However, additional details about her character's involvement in the criminal plot have not been revealed.

The movie promises a combination of sports drama, psychological tension, and crime-thriller suspense.

Patrick Schwarzenegger Takes On a Darker Leading Role

For Patrick Schwarzenegger, The Journeyman represents another significant step in his growing acting career.

The actor earned widespread attention for his performance in the third season of HBO's acclaimed series The White Lotus, where he played Saxon Ratliff, a privileged and frequently controversial member of a wealthy family vacationing in Thailand.

The role helped introduce Schwarzenegger to a broader audience and demonstrated his ability to portray morally complicated characters.

He also appeared in the superhero series Gen V, expanding his television résumé beyond romantic dramas and comedies. His upcoming projects include Mike Birbiglia's comedy Old Friends New Friends, as well as the film adaptation of Emily Henry's bestselling romance novel Beach Read.

With The Journeyman, Schwarzenegger will move into a lead role that combines physical performance with emotional and psychological intensity. Portraying a professional tennis player also presents a distinct challenge. The character's athletic abilities must feel convincing while the story explores the emotional consequences of his involvement in organized match-fixing.

Leslie Grace Returns to the Big Screen in a Crime Thriller

Leslie Grace is joining the project following a career that has spanned music, musicals, and dramatic films. The singer and actress made a major impression with her portrayal of Nina Rosario in In the Heights, the 2021 film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical.

Her performance showcased her singing, dancing, and acting abilities, positioning her as a promising Hollywood talent.

Grace was subsequently cast as Barbara Gordon in Warner Bros.' Batgirl, a superhero film that was ultimately shelved despite having completed principal photography.

Since then, she has continued pursuing acting and music, appearing in projects including In the Summers and releasing her album ¿Amor Quién Eres? through Sony Music Latin.

Although the full extent of her character's storyline remains unknown, the relationship between Grace's and Schwarzenegger's characters could become a central emotional element as the tennis player's choices grow increasingly dangerous.

Ángel Manuel Soto Will Direct ‘The Journeyman’ in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rican filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto will direct The Journeyman, bringing his experience with action, character-driven storytelling, and visually ambitious productions to the tennis crime thriller.

Soto previously directed DC's Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Maridueña, and the critically acclaimed drama Charm City Kings. His more recent work includes the Amazon MGM Studios action comedy The Wrecking Crew, starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.

The production's Puerto Rico setting is particularly notable because Soto is returning to his home territory for another major filmmaking project. Filming is scheduled to take place in San Juan, with The Pimienta Film Company providing local production services.

The screenplay was written by husband-and-wife team Bryan and Alexis Roberts, professionally known as The Roberts, with revisions by Bill Dubuque, whose credits include Ozark and The Accountant.

When Will ‘The Journeyman’ Be Released?
