James Gunn has Batman fans looking to the future, and some already have Michael Keaton in mind. Speaking with HOLA at the Los Angeles premiere of “Clayface,” the DC Studios co-chief shared his enthusiasm for “Batman Beyond” when asked which Batman animated stories could make great films.
His response quickly circulated online, inspiring requests for an adaptation and suggestions that Keaton play an older Bruce Wayne. “I love Batman Beyond, so that’s a great thing for the future,” Gunn said.
“And I think that’s something that originated in animation that could be a good movie, that’s one of them.” Gunn did not announce a project or discuss casting, but his answer was enough to get viewers imagining the possibilities.
Fans want Michael Keaton as an older Bruce Wayne:
Among the reactions, one casting suggestion stood out. Bringing Keaton into the world of Batman Beyond. “I’ll take a Batman Beyond movie with Michael Keaton as Bruce,” one fan wrote on Instagram. On X, another fan paired photographs of Keaton and the animated Bruce Wayne with the message, “Would love to see Michael Keaton as old Batman."
The appeal lies in the animated series’ central relationship. Running from 1999 to 2001, “Batman Beyond” follows a new Batman, Terry McGinnis, who combines advanced technology with the guidance and investigative instincts of Bruce Wayne. The setup explores the Batman legacy through a younger successor and an older mentor.
For viewers suggesting Keaton, that relationship offers a chance to imagine him helping another actor take on the mantle. His involvement, however, remains entirely a fan wish.
Others were simply excited to hear Gunn acknowledge Terry’s world. “Batman Beyond love is deserved,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “Yesss Terry getting the appreciation he deserves.” Some appealed directly to the filmmaker. “JAMES GUNN!!!! GIVE ME BATMAN BEYOND, AND MY LIFE IS YOURS.”
What Gunn actually said about a potential movie:
As his answer circulated, fans began discussing their preferred version of an adaptation, with several specifically requesting live action.
Gunn’s remarks were broader. He said he loved Batman Beyond and thought it could make a good movie, without specifying a format, production timeline or cast.
The distinction leaves plenty of room for excitement while keeping expectations grounded. His answer expressed interest in the property rather than confirming a film.
The discussion also prompted requests for other animated Batman stories. “Mask of the Phantasm would be peak live action it’s already amazing,” one viewer wrote.
Fans revisit viral Batman Beyond movie pitch:
Gunn’s remarks also had fans looking back at a Batman Beyond animated film pitch that attracted attention in 2024.
Writer-director Patrick Harpin, and production designer Yuhki Demers, whose credits include the Spider-Verse films, developed the proposal. Demers shared concept artwork in February 2024, revealing a neon-soaked vision of Gotham and its futuristic Batman. At the time, he explained that their presentation had shifted the response from a “never” to a “maybe.”
That artwork is circulating again following Gunn’s comments. One X user shared the images alongside the new interview remarks, writing, “RESTORE THE BATMAN BEYOND.”
The renewed interest highlights two possibilities capturing fans’ imaginations. A live-action film featuring an older Bruce Wayne, and an animated adventure embracing the striking visual style of the earlier pitch.
Harley Quinn also made his list:
Batman Beyond was not the only animated creation Gunn mentioned. “And of course, I love Harley Quinn and she, she originated in animation,” he added.
Harley debuted in “Batman: The Animated Series” before becoming a major presence in DC’s comics and movies, demonstrating how animation can introduce characters whose popularity extends far beyond their original format.
Her inclusion sparked its own responses, with viewers requesting more Harley Quinn and expressing support for Margot Robbie’s portrayal.
The conversation had begun with Clayface’s history. Gunn clarified that several versions of the character had appeared in the comics, then singled out Matt Hagen’s storyline in “Batman: The Animated Series” for its emotional impact.
His affection for those animated stories carried into his Batman Beyond answer. And judging by the reactions, fans are eager to see where that enthusiasm might lead, especially if their dream version includes Keaton.
