Anne Hathaway reveals the creepy improvised moment that made it into 'Verity'

Verity feels like one of the films of the moment. Starring Anne Hathaway in the titular role after a banner year of amazing acting work, the film is a dark romance from BookTok queen Colleen Hoover. She's the writer behind book-to-screen adaptations like "It Ends With Us" and "Reminders of Him," but this book marks her darkest adaptation yet. If you need more reasons to watch, it also stars Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, and the three are involved in a complex love triangle.

Directed by Michael Showalter, "Verity" follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer hired to finish the bestselling series of Verity Crawford (Hathaway), who was left paralyzed and unable to speak after a car accident. While working through Verity's notes at her home, Lowen grows close to Verity's husband, Jeremy (Hartnett), setting off a twisty and dangerous romance.

In an interview with HOLA!, the three actors opened up about making the movie and some of the fun they had when creating characters that go to some really dark places.

"I remember there's this one [scene] where Verity's doing something awful," said Hathaway. "And Michael [Showalter] came to me and said, 'Okay, we're gonna do it one more time. Can you get into bed and be the happiest person who's ever gotten into bed?'"

"For some reason I thought, what if I waltz my way into bed?" 

Hathaway did her waltz, with her and Showalter bursting into laughter after they'd completed the shot. The two thought the moment was too crazy to be featured into the final cut of the final cur of the film. "And we were wrong! It's in the movie," she said.

What Johnson and Hathaway agree upon

As is the case with movies of this sort where there are changing dynamics depending on the narrator, the film invites many interpretations. The actors themselves have a lot of theories about their own characters and the possibilities of the story. There's one thing that Johnson and Hathaway agree upon, though.

"I think Josh has crazy theories," said Johnson. "But as me, I'm aware that Lowen is a crazy person."

Hathaway laughs: "As Verity and myself, I'm aware that Lowen's a crazy person."
