Ryan Gosling is back in for one of next year's biggest movies. The trailer for "Project Hail Mary" has just been released, teasing a Gosling journey to space that will premiere in 2026.
Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who wakes up inside a spaceship, with no recollection of how he got there, on a mission to save the Earth from an impending disaster that's causing the stars to die out one by one for unknown reasons.
"I put the not in astronaut. I've never done anything. I've never done a space walk. I can't even moonwalk," says Gosling in the trailer.
The footage teases an encounter with an alien who appears to be in a similar situation to Gosling. The movie is based on the book of the same name, written by Andy Weir, who is also the author of the novel "The Martian." You can check out the trailer in full below
More details about 'Project Hail Mary'
"Project Hail Mary" was developed with some of the leading talents in the entertainment industry. The movie is written by Drew Goddard, who adapted the Academy Award-nominated screenplay "The Martian," and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on many films, including the "Spider-Verse" franchise.
Gosling, Lord, and Miller introduced the film at CinemaCon, hyping it up as one of the most exciting projects coming in 2026. “They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry," said Gosling of working with the duo of writers and directors.
He also described the film as "insanely" ambitious. "Literally, we tried to put it on a TV once. It didn't fit," he said. The cast is rounded out by Sandra Huller, Liz Kingsman, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, James Wright, and more.
"Project Hail Mary" premieres in theaters and IMAX on March 20th, 2026
