Rihanna is back to making music. Kind of.

The beloved musician has shared the first trailer of the "Smurfs" movie, where she's playing the role of Smurfette. In the clip, Rihanna introduces the trailer and appears consistently throughout its runtime, confirming the news that she plays one of the lead characters.

The Smurfs movie promises new Rihanna music

"Smurfs" is produced by Paramount Studios and follows the Smurfs as they're introduced to the human world after their magical world is challenged.

The film stars a talented cast that includes John Goodman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Kurt Russell, and more.

The movie features new original songs by Rihanna, who's serving as one of the film's producers and wrote the songs

It's directed by animation legend Chris Miller and Matt Landon and while it remains a part of the Smurfs franchise, the film appears to not be a sequel to the previous Smurf films that starred Katy Perry and Demi Lovato.

In 2023, Rihanna shared the news that she'd be involved in the film. “I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out,”  she joked at CinemaCon. She serves as producer and wrote some songs for the project.

In the movie's trailer, Rihanna can be heard singing her hit song "Please Don't Stop The Music" and a cover of Belinda Carlile's "Heaven Is A Place on Earth." You can check out the full trailer below.

When is Rihanna releasing a new album?

Rihanna hasn't released a new album since 2016, when she dropped her hit record "Anti." Through the years, she's released music sporadically, including songs included in the "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" soundtrack, and songs like "Lift Me Up" and "Born Again."

While she's discussed releasing a new record over the past years, it seems like there are still no solid plans for it.

“I don’t want to neglect the songs that I have, so I actually want to go back and listen to stuff with new ears, with my new perspective and then see what applies and what I’m still in love with,” she said to Entertainment Tonight last June. "I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside, and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!”
