Leo Messi is mourning the death of a fellow soccer player who played in the Spanish soccer league. In a new post on Instagram, Messi shared a tribute to Jesús de Miguel Alameda, a forward for Tenerife who died after colliding with another player on the pitch. He was 30 years old.
Messi shared a black-and-white photo of Alameda and wrote some brief thoughts. "There are no words... My condolences and lots of strength to his family and friends. May he rest in peace."
He shared a post shared by Tenerife on their Instagram stories, mourning Alameda.
"Broken with pain, with a lump in the throat and unable to believe this is true, from the Tenerife CD we communicate the tragic death, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 am, of Jesús de Miguel Alameda," wrote the club on social media.
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling full of sadness. We are with his desolate family, with his loved ones, with all the Tenerife people who are crying today for this cruel outcome.
The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the shows of support received, and also requests, from the heart, maximum respect for his privacy, in these terrible moments."
Different soccer clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, left their condolences in the comments section, with the news deeply shaking the international soccer community.
What happened on the pitch?
Alameda was playing for Tenerife on Monday, where he crashed into Jesús Owono, the goalkeeper for Andorra, who was expelled from the match.
Alameda's status was described as serious but stable, as reported by the BBC. His condition worsened on Tuesday morning, with the club reporting his death later in the day.
Footage from the game captured the moment of the collision, with Alameda slamming into what appears to be Owono's knee. He was quickly brought off the field, with many players captured crying.
Marca reports that Alameda had a cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the hospital and that he was reanimated by personnel.
