Orlando Bloom is getting candid about one of the more intimate scenes in his latest film.
The actor plays Gareth, aka the Bucking Fastard, in Werner Herzog’s new movie Bucking Fastard, which features Bloom in a threesome scene with sisters Kate Mara and Rooney Mara.
Speaking at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, Bloom reflected on filming the intimate sequence and said there was an unexpected sincerity to the moment.
Orlando Calls the Scene “Sincere”
According to Variety, Bloom said the characters have a straightforward approach to their desires while also carrying a sense of innocence.
“There’s such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” he said.
Bloom added that his character is sensitive and quickly finds himself in unfamiliar territory.
“My character, the Bucking Fastard, is sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways,” he explained. “It was a very sincere sort of moment that was created.”
What Is Bucking Fastard About?
The film centers on Jean, played by Kate Mara, and Joan, played by Rooney Mara, two sisters whose connection is so intense that they seemingly experience life on the same wavelength.
The sisters speak in unison, share the same dreams and fall for the same man, played by Bloom.
The movie explores how the unusual pair navigate a world that doesn't necessarily understand them, with their story unfolding through the courts, the media and the people who either want to help them or take advantage of them.
Werner Herzog Let Bloom Take the Lead
When it came time to shoot the love scene, Herzog took a hands-off approach.
The legendary filmmaker explained that there are moments when a director simply has to step back and allow the actors to navigate the scene themselves.
Herzog said he told Bloom that he couldn't instruct him on how to handle being in bed with two women, describing the resulting scene as something that had "charm and depth."
Bloom Has Pushed Himself for Roles Before
The intimate scene isn't the only time Bloom has gone outside his comfort zone for a movie role.
For his 2025 film The Cut, the Lord of the Rings star underwent a dramatic physical transformation, losing 52 pounds to play a boxer.
The extreme weight loss took a serious toll on him mentally and physically.
“I was exhausted mentally, physically. I was hangry,” Bloom said during an August 2025 appearance on This Morning. “I was a horrible person to be around. The paranoia, the intrusive thoughts.”
The Diet Was No Joke
Bloom said his nutritionist closely monitored him throughout the process, including keeping tabs on his bloodwork.
His food intake was gradually reduced from three meals a day to two, then eventually one. Even his protein powder eventually had to go.
“Suddenly, all these foods were being taken away from me, and my protein powder was the last one,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘No! Don’t take that one.’”
Bloom ultimately warned that the process was just as intense as it appeared on screen.
“It was definitely not something to take lightly,” he said.
