Anne Hathaway recently opened up about how she revealed her first two pregnancies to the public through social media. During an interview with People for its World's Most Beautiful issue in April, the actress looked back on the circumstances that led her to make those announcements herself.

The conversation comes shortly after Hathaway, 43, announced on Friday, June 19, that she is expecting her third child.

Why She Chose to Announce Her Pregnancies Herself

Hathaway explained that she decided to take control of the narrative after realizing that photographers had already captured images of her while she was pregnant.

“Basically, I saw someone was taking photos of me and I think at that point, people kind of knew I was pregnant," Hathaway told People. "I think there were some street shots where you’re just like, ‘Eh, just had a big meal.’ But I was just like, 'Ok, this is going to happen now.' "

The actress said she discussed the situation with her husband, Adam Shulman, and saw social media as a way to share the news on her own terms.

"And I remember talking to Adam about it and I was like, ‘Maybe this is a good use for social media,' " she continued, referring to her husband Adam Shulman. "If it’s going to happen anyway, maybe I can put something out that feels more personal and that comes from me as opposed to it having to be this thing that happens outside of me."

Looking back, Hathaway said the experience was empowering.

"And so yeah, that was one of the first times that I ever realized that, I don’t know, I got to make the announcement myself. It was really, really cool."

Feeling Grateful for Motherhood

Hathaway, who is the mother of sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6, also spoke about how much becoming a parent has meant to her.

She described herself as fortunate to have experienced motherhood, acknowledging that the journey is not possible for everyone.

"I know that not everybody who wants to be a mom gets to be, or a parent gets to be," she said. "And I’m just blown away by how fortunate I am. I just got emotional taking a look at that to realize that it went really well for me twice. And that’s really lucky."

Announcing Baby No. 3

The Oscar-winning actress revealed her third pregnancy through a video shared on Instagram.

In the clip, Hathaway appeared in a flowing white dress and stepped into view with her hands placed in front of her stomach. As the song "Baby I'm Yours" by Barbara Lewis played, she lowered her arms to reveal her baby bump, smiled, embraced her stomach, and then exited the frame.

How Motherhood Changed Her Perspective

In a previous interview with WSJ Magazine in March 2022, Hathaway discussed the profound impact motherhood has had on her life.

"I didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mom,” Hathaway told WSJ Magazine at the time. “It's not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word."

She went on to explain how becoming a parent motivated her to be more accountable and authentic.

"And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself. And it's little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you're not being your best self."
