Sharon Stone is opening up about her past, with details about her life and family. On paper, her lineage traces back to royalty. During an appearance on Finding Your Roots in 2025, she learned that her ancestry connects her to some of the most powerful figures in history, including Charlemagne. While she may have royal roots, in reality, she grew up with very little.
While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Casino star shared that her family's story is one of extremes, shaped by both wealth and deep hardship. “My dad had come from just inordinate wealth,” she explained, adding that her family line included “a long line of royalty” and even early oil drillers in Pennsylvania.
But that legacy didn’t translate into security. A tragic accident changed everything. “They were drilling an oil well, and it blew and killed everyone,” she said. "All of a sudden, his mother and her three kids, well, they didn't get the money because the money didn't go to women. The women didn't have rights."
After that, the family’s fortune was out of reach. “The women didn’t have rights,” she added, explaining that the money went to an 18-year-old male relative instead of her grandmother.
What followed was a complete shift in their reality. Her grandmother was forced to rebuild from nothing, working as a nurse while raising her children in what Stone described as a barn stall. “My dad was working… and he eventually bought back the family home,” she said, noting that it had fallen into ruin by then.
On her mother Dorothy's side, things were just as difficult. “My mom came from incredible poverty,” Stone shared, revealing that her mother was removed from her home due to abuse and sent away to work as a child. “She was given to someone at nine to be their maid, laundress, cook.”
Both of her parents were forced to grow up quickly, marrying as teenagers and navigating life without the kind of stability most people take for granted.
Looking back, Stone says that shaped everything. “There was a lot of dysfunction in my family,” she admitted, describing both parents as having been “semi-orphaned. "They were both Depression-era people, so they were both in the World War II crisis in this kind of extraordinary poverty with nothing available," she shared.
Her life changed when she moved to New York to pursue modeling, and she experienced financial independence for the first time. That moment opened the door to a career that would take her from high-fashion runways to Hollywood, where she went on to become one of the most recognizable actresses of her generation. Today, her net worth is estimated at $25 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
