The role Jennifer Lopez plays in Office Romance could not have been played by anyone else, just ask Brett Goldstein!
During a recent appearance on an episode of Sirius XM's BPM, J.Lo opened up about her upcoming project, a "raunchy" rom-com about a secret workplace relationship. In the movie, she stars opposite Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein, who also co-wrote the movie.
The 56-year-old rom-com vet revealed that her leading character, Jackie Cruz, was created specifically with her in mind. According to Lopez, Goldstein and co-writer Joe Kelly were prepared to scrap the entire project if she didn't sign on to participate.
"They sent me the script and they were like, 'We wrote this for you. If you don't do it, we're not even making the movie,' " the singer recalled. "But it was really funny and me and my partner — Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, my producing partner — really loved it."
"And we went, and we did it, and I'm so glad we did," she continued. "I'm really excited for people to see it."
In Office Romance, Lopez plays Jackie Cruz, a CEO at a major company, who catches feelings for Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein), a new employee. J.Lo previously told people that the "fun, raunchy and romantic" dynamic of the film drew her in, saying she loved the modern take on the movie's humor.
Even while being "booked back to back" with other projects, Lopez loved the film so much, she felt it was important to make Office Romance work.
"I'm really excited about it," she said on BPM. "It's really funny ... It's kind of a classic rom-com, but it has, like, hard jokes, you know what I mean?"
"It's like a little bit edgier than a normal J.Lo rom-com in a way, but it has all the DNA of a classic, you know, romantic comedy that you love, that you just kind of really fall in love with the characters and things like that," the star explained.
Lopez went on to praise the "amazing supporting cast" of Office Romance, comparing the group to that of Maid in Manhattan. In addition to Lopez and Goldstein, Office Romance also features Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, and Edward James Olmos.
Office Romance will start streaming on Netflix on June 5.
