Michelle and Barack Obama are two of the most notorious people in America, yet they're still dealing with situations that people from all walks of life face. In a new appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," Michelle was featured, discussing her new book "The Look," her experience as First Lady, and the fact that her kids have moved out of their house.
© Backgrid/The Grosby GroupMichelle opened up about her life with Barack Obama after her kids, Sasha and Malia, left their house to live on their own. "They're gone!" she said with excitement, prompting a laugh from the audience.
She then shed light on what her life with Barack looks like, with the two having more time for themselves yet still staying busy with their own personal projects and passions. "We're having a lot of fun together," said Michelle.
"He's still working, campaigning." Then, she added with a grunt, "Trying to carry democracy on his back."
© @destinconradMalia and Sasha Obama are 27 and 24, respectively, and are both based in California after having completed their college education. When it comes to their careers, Malia has begun establishing herself in the film industry, writing for some TV shows and directing and writing her own short, where she decided to drop the last name Obama for audience members to have an unbiased experience of her work.
"It is very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world, and they don't want people to assume that they don't work hard, that they're just handed things," said Michelle in an appearance on the Sibling Revelry podcast. "They're very sensitive to that — they want to be their own people."
In the case of Sasha, she graduated in 2023 from the University of Southern California with a degree in sociology.
What Michelle learned in the White House
© PoolIn her interview with Colbert, Michelle also opened up about her 10 years of political career, which included eight years in the White House, plus the two years of campaigning. She said that she got to see the country in a very unique way, and learned some things that have served her as she's aged and matured. "I think I'm tougher. I think I'm more confident. I think those eight years made it very clear what I wanted and what I didn't want," she said.
"And time! I'm 61 now, y'all," she said, prompting a laugh from the audience. "There's just a level of wisdom that comes with that. I don't know if I can attribute that to the White House or just 61 years of living life."
