This past weekend, María del Refugio Abarca, better known as Doña Cuquita, became a trending topic after a video from her son Alejandro Fernández’s concert went viral. In the clip, the widow of Vicente Fernández appeared affectionate with a mysterious man, sparking speculation online that she had found a new love.
The moment unfolded during a set in which Alejandro, also known as El Potrillo, performed some of his late father’s greatest hits. While he sang Las Botas del Charro, Doña Cuquita took the man’s hand, placed it around her neck, and shared a fraternal kiss near the mouth. The gesture was enough to ignite a wave of rumors suggesting the man was her new partner.
In the video, Doña Cuquita looked emotional as she sang along to the classic made famous by her husband, who passed away in December 2021.
Who is the Mystery Man?
The viral images led many outlets to claim that Doña Cuquita had a new romance. However, entertainment journalist Pablo Chagra quickly set the record straight. In a follow-up video, he revealed that the man seen at her side was not a boyfriend but her older brother, Jaime.
“She was also accompanied by another person who seemed to be family, maybe her sister. With her brother, she shared a kiss that, from the camera angle, looked like it was on the mouth, but it was not,” Chagra explained.
A Family Known for Its Affection
The Fernández family is famously close and affectionate, which explains the tender display between Doña Cuquita and her brother. Another clip from the same concert shows Jaime comforting his sister as they shared a nostalgic moment, remembering Vicente.
The viral moment may have sparked confusion, but the truth is simple: the mystery man by Doña Cuquita’s side was not a new romance. He was family.
