Hernandez's introduction was set up by Mescal, who's Irish, and was discussing some of the misconceptions that surround people in the United Kingdom.

“A lot of people ask if we wear kilts—no, that’s the Scottish,” he said. “Traditionally, the Irish wear short shorts."

Hernandez joined Mescal onstage wearing some bright blue shorts and a button-up, referencing the many memes that have appeared ever since Mescal began to be photographed by paparazzi while out on runs or workouts in various cities.

“I’m trying to be like you man. You like what you see?” said Hernandez, slapping his thighs.

“Absolutely not. By the way, those are way too short,” said Mescal.

Hernandez disagreed. “Well you know what they say, Paul. The shorter the shorts, the taller you look."

More details in Mescal's episode

This marked Mescal's first time hosting the storied comedy show and featured many highlights and references to pop culture, trying to work against his type of a "serious" Hollywood actor.

Mescal recently starred in "Gladiator 2," one of the biggest film releases of the year. The film, which co-stars Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and more, stars Mescal in the lead role, as he climbs the ranks of the gladiator arena hoping to achieve his freedom and his revenge.

The film was released alongside "Wicked," which inspired one of the best skits of the night, with Mescal playing a musical version of his Gladiator. At the end of the video, Mescal is seen wearing a black hat and flying away from the Colosseum in a broom, much like Elphaba, the protagonist of "Wicked."
