King Charles III found himself in an unexpectedly awkward situation when a torrential rainstorm interrupted a royal engagement in Antigua and Barbuda, leaving the British monarch soaking wet and visibly frustrated with his aides.
The 77-year-old King was attending celebrations marking Antigua and Barbuda's 45th anniversary of independence on Sunday, November 1, 2026, when the weather suddenly took a dramatic turn.
While Queen Camilla, 79, was quickly handed an umbrella and escorted toward shelter, Charles remained exposed to the heavy rain. Cameras captured the monarch throwing his hands into the air, gesturing toward his staff and repeatedly requesting an umbrella.
King Charles Appears Furious as Aides Leave Him Without an Umbrella
The royal couple had arrived at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua for an independence parade when the skies opened. According to reports, the sudden downpour began shortly after their arrival, catching officials and guests off guard.
Camilla, wearing a white Anna Valentine outfit, received a transparent umbrella from a protection officer and began moving toward a covered seating area.
Her husband was not quite as fortunate. As rain poured down, Charles stood on the ceremonial platform without protection, his light-colored suit becoming increasingly wet.
Footage showed the King turning toward his aides and making repeated gestures, apparently trying to get someone's attention. At one point, he raised his arms and mimicked holding an umbrella over his head.
According to reports, the monarch repeatedly asked, "Where's my umbrella?"
His apparent irritation became more noticeable as the rain continued, particularly after Camilla had already been escorted away from the exposed area. Eventually, his equerry, Major Ben Rigby, arrived with a black umbrella.
The King accepted it and proceeded with his official responsibilities, including inspecting the assembled troops.
Although the footage showed Charles looking exasperated, there has been no confirmed explanation from Buckingham Palace about why an umbrella was not immediately available to him.
King Charles Jokes About His Soaked Suit After the Rainstorm
The King's frustration did not appear to last long. Later, while speaking with Antigua and Barbuda's Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Charles joked about the effects of the downpour on his clothing. "I think I'm about to grow watercress on my suit," he said in a video shared by the royal family's Instagram account, according to Reuters.
The amusing remark suggested the monarch had recovered his sense of humor after the uncomfortable experience. Camilla also reportedly joked about the humidity and its effect on her hair.
