An ordinary journey through London came with some unexpected royal company this weekend. Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte were spotted riding the Elizabeth line on Saturday, October 10, sitting among fellow passengers during a mother-daughter outing.
But it was a small, affectionate gesture as they left the train that gave the sighting its sweetest detail.
Kate’s affectionate gesture toward Charlotte:
As the pair stepped off at Tottenham Court Road, Kate held her 11-year-old daughter’s hand, while security officers accompanied them discreetly throughout the journey.
Kate was also reportedly seen briefly checking her phone, adding a familiar everyday detail to the unexpected appearance. The atmosphere inside the carriage appeared equally relaxed. As reported by our sister publication HELLO!, an eyewitness said Charlotte looked “amazed” by her surroundings and that the pair briefly interacted with passengers.
“They seemed very relaxed and were chatting together, smiling,” the witness said.
A mother-daughter outing with a little mystery:
While their journey attracted attention, where Kate and Charlotte were heading remains unknown. It was also reported that they disembarked at Tottenham Court Road, near the West End and British Museum, but their plans for the rest of the day have not been publicly confirmed.
The publication also described Kate as appearing to wear a burgundy outfit with matching heels. Although some reports have suggested the journey could have been Charlotte’s first experience on London’s rail network, that detail has not been confirmed.
The royal connection behind their journey:
Their choice of route carried a family connection. The Elizabeth line was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, Charlotte’s great-grandmother.
The late monarch visited Paddington station with Prince Edward on May 17, 2022, unveiling a plaque to mark the railway’s completion ahead of passenger services beginning the following week.
Kate is already familiar with the route. In May 2023, she and Prince William traveled on the Elizabeth line to Soho, where they visited the Dog & Duck pub ahead of King Charles’s coronation. During that engagement, the couple met staff and representatives from local hospitality businesses preparing for the celebrations.
This latest sighting offered a more personal glimpse of Kate with her daughter. Their reported smiles and the simple act of leaving the train hand in hand gave royal watchers a moment of mother-daughter affection to enjoy.
