King Frederik X traded the palace for the deck of one of Denmark's most recognizable royal vessels this week, stepping aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog for an engagement that carried a special connection to his own past.
The 58-year-old Danish monarch looked every inch the naval officer as he arrived in full uniform aboard the historic yacht, which was anchored in Copenhagen Harbor.
The striking photographs released by the Danish Royal House showed Frederik saluting members of the Navy and posing on deck against the Copenhagen skyline.
The King was aboard Dannebrog to meet the Danish Navy's newly graduated first lieutenants. According to the Royal House, the officers were formally presented to Frederik during the engagement.
During the presentation, the monarch delivered a short speech in which he recognized the officers for completing their training before personally congratulating each of the newly qualified first lieutenants.
A role close to King Frederik:
While the appearance made for a particularly regal set of photographs, Frederik's connection to Denmark's armed forces extends far beyond his duties as monarch.
The King's military education began in 1986 with the Royal Life Guard. He later trained across different branches of the Danish Armed Forces, but his history with the Navy is particularly notable.
In 1995, Frederik completed the notoriously demanding frogman training with the Royal Danish Navy's Frogman Corps. That same year, he was appointed a first lieutenant of the reserve in the Navy.
His naval career continued in the decades that followed. Frederik rose through the ranks and was appointed rear admiral in 2015. When he succeeded his mother, Queen Margrethe II, on January 14, 2024, he was elevated to the highest military ranks in Denmark's three armed services.
He now holds the rank of admiral in the Navy and general in both the Army and Air Force. The distinction was reflected in one of the defining images of the beginning of his reign.
When Frederik appeared on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace following his proclamation as king in 2024, he wore the Navy's full-dress uniform as admiral for the first time, complete with four stars on his shoulder insignia.
A royal yacht steeped in history:
The setting for Frederik's latest engagement also holds a special place within the Danish monarchy. The Royal Yacht Dannebrog has served the Danish royal family since 1932 and functions as both a royal residence and an official vessel.
The 78-meter yacht is operated by the Navy and has its own command. Its full crew includes officers, sergeants, seamen and dozens of specially selected Navy conscripts. Since the Danish flag was first raised aboard the vessel in 1932, Dannebrog has traveled more than 800,000 nautical miles and trained approximately 3,300 recruits.
The yacht continues to play an active role in royal life, carrying members of the family on official journeys around Denmark as well as to Greenland, the Faroe Islands and destinations abroad.
For Frederik, however, Tuesday's appearance brought together two important parts of his public life. His role as Denmark's monarch and a military career that began nearly four decades ago.
