For more than two centuries, the world of whisky was dominated by men. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Emma Walker, Johnnie Walker is writing a new chapter for the industry: one that is innovative, inclusive, and contemporary. After becoming the first woman to hold the role of Master Blender at Johnnie Walker, her vision has focused on expanding the ways in which new generations discover and enjoy this iconic drink.

Although her last name seems tailor-made for the role she plays today, Emma often finds herself explaining to inquiring minds that she is in fact not related to John Walker, the founder of the iconic whisky house.

Her rise to the highest levels of the industry wasn’t a matter of inheritance, but a path she forged through her talent and passion. With a Ph.D. in chemistry, she traded the lab for the distillery, becoming the eighth “master blender” at the Scottish company. Her scientific training allows her to understand the complex network of reactions that take place over months and years in the production process of every bottle of Johnnie Walker.

Emma serves as a bridge between the brand’s tradition and innovation through science, and she has also become one of the voices transforming an industry that has historically been male dominated. Part of this vision is evident in the recent launch of Johnnie Walker Black Cask, a sweet and versatile offering that’s an approachable yet complex whisky for drinkers who enjoy both Scotch and American whiskey flavor profiles.

In an exclusive interview with ¡HOLA!, Emma Walker reflects on leadership, innovation, the role of science in creating new flavors, and the future of whisky.

You are the 8th Master Blender at Johnnie Walker and the first woman to hold the position in a brand with a 200-year history. That's incredibly noteworthy. What's your approach when pushing the brand forward while still respecting its legacy?

You’ve tapped into something at the heart of Johnnie Walker with this question! Our motto is ‘Keep Walking’ and that influences everything we do. The tension is always in how we can remain innovative and continue to move forward, whilst honoring the rich heritage and remarkable legacy of Johnnie Walker.

I’m conscious that I’m part of an incredible flavour tradition at Johnnie Walker. Every whisky maker in our team knows the role we play in a brand that has a long history of craftsmanship and whisky blending. Our history is important to us, and it actually gives us the foundation we need to spearhead new innovations; the decisions that were made in the past, such as how we run our distilleries or how we create great flavour, is how we’re able to make bold new choices.

The curiosity we have about the future, and where we want to be next, is ingrained in the brand’s DNA – so I like to think we have this innate need to push the boundaries of what is possible within whisky, that is a real privilege.

There's a lot of science and calculation when it comes to blending whisky, but also a lot of personal choice and artistry. What is your approach to developing a new whisky blend? How does your chemistry background influence your process?

This tension is absolutely correct, and there’s a sweet spot where we can harness both science and creativity to create something special – and importantly, they’re not mutually exclusive. I use my chemistry knowledge every day. Science helps me to understand how flavour is created in our distilleries and in maturation, and how we can impact flavour through experimentation.

One of the reasons I love my role is because it gives me the opportunity to marry my background in science with my passion for flavour and whisky. In bringing together different flavours, characters, and textures of different whiskies, blending begins to unlock hidden depths in those individual parts. The part we play is trying to see the bigger picture - understanding how all of these component parts will interplay with each other and which can be wed to unearth new flavours or textures – that’s the job.

How would you introduce whisky to someone who isn't interested in the drink or finds the world of whisky too intimidating?

My favorite question! I love being able to show the beauty of whisky to an unsure audience and see that spark in their eyes when they realize they’ve discovered their new favorite drink. It’s the best part of my job.

Whisky conjures an image in a lot of people’s eyes: a man of a certain age, drinking a neat dram in a leather chair! I think this has played a part in some people not feeling like whisky is a drink for them - and we’re working hard to prove that wrong and bring them into the wonderful world of whisky.

For someone new to trying whisky, I would ask how they usually enjoy other spirits - it’s likely to be in a cocktail. When creating a cocktail like a highball, the bartender is continuing the work of the whisky blender, understanding the flavours in the spirit and layering these with other ingredients to create something accessible and delicious which can be enjoyed by anyone. People are now enjoying Johnnie Walker, and whisky more widely, in many different ways, from on the rocks, to highball serves and a range of cocktails - we always say the best way to drink whisky is in the way you like it best. There’s no one right way to enjoy it!
