9 superfoods you should always have in the pantry

Nature provides us with everything we need to stay healthy. Superfoods, as the name suggests, provide huge nutritional value, making them the perfect addition to a healthy diet based on balance and moderation. Although there are lots of superfoods out there, here's a list of nine pantry must-haves:

Ginger

This root containing gingerol, the element that gives it its characteristic kick, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that your body will thank you for. In addition to helping to fight digestive, respiratory and heart disease, it boosts metabolism, improves circulation and reduces anxiety. You can add it to smoothies, tea or use it to season your favorite meals.

Mixed berries

Raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and acai berries all have a high soluble fiber content—which helps to control appetite—and very few calories. They have antioxidant properties, which help to reduce the damage caused by free radicals. They are good for the skin and also help keep your cardiovascular system healthy thanks to their anthocyanin, polyphenol and flavonoid content. Half a cup of mixed berries a day is a great snack.

Mushrooms

Yes, these trusty old friends are extremely good for you. In addition to boosting the immune system, a study by the National University of Singapore showed that consuming 300 grams a week of certain varieties, including enoki and shiitake mushrooms, reduces mild cognitive deterioration in people over 60.

Chlorella

This green algae is full of essential amino acids, calcium, vitamins A, B, C, E and K. It’s high levels of chlorophyll and antioxidants that help oxygenate the blood. When consumed over extended periods of time, it is able to powerfully detoxify and helps eliminate heavy metals such as mercury from the body. It also helps to rid the body of radioactive particles and slows the aging process.

Chia seeds

Their high protein and fiber content make them the perfect ally for reducing bad cholesterol and alleviating constipation. They contain antioxidants, are rich in Omega 3, which you can get by crushing them, help keep you hydrated—retaining up to 12 times their own weight in water—and help you lose weight. They don't change the taste of other foods so you can simply add them to an endless number of recipes, from rice, to cakes and sauces.

Avocado

The monounsaturated fats in avocados are good for the heart, and are essential for lowering bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as for protecting cell membranes and nuclei thanks to their high vitamin E content. They also contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that help control blood sugar levels.

Hemp seeds

Hemp seeds, which come form the cannabis plant, have a high fiber content that benefits the digestive system by improving intestinal transit. They also contain high levels of protein, and Omega 3 and Omega 6 (the essential fatty acids). You can buy this superfood as seeds or in powder form. Sprinkle some on salads, desserts or whatever takes your fancy!

Cacao

Not only is it the main ingredient of the most delicious sweets, cacao is also a source of polyphenols—powerful anti-inflammatories and antioxidants—and flavonoids, which among other benefits, regulate blood pressure, improve memory functions, combat depression and contribute to good cardiovascular health. Buy it pure, with no added preservatives, refined sugars or dairy products, and add it to desserts, snacks or even your favorite drink!

Moringa

Almost all of the moringa plant can be used, from its bark to its flowers, with many benefits to the body: it's a great source of iron, helps control blood sugar levels, fights degenerative diseases, raises the blood's antioxidant levels thanks to chlorogenic acid and quercetin, and combats inflammation due to the properties of its isothiocyanates.
