Poncho Herrera's 'Las Muertas': Everything we know about the exciting Mexican series

Netflix is sharing some of their upcoming International programming, highlighting one of the most exciting Mexican series of the year. "Las Muertas" is director and writer Luis Estrada's first TV show, and marks an exciting moment for fans of his work, leading a project starring Alfonso Herrera, Paulina Gaitan, and more. Here's what you should know about the series and why it should earn a spot at the top of your watchlist: 

What's it about?

Based on the beloved novel of the same name, published in 1977 by Jorge Ibargüengoitia, one of the most notorious Mexican authors over the past century. The series is based on the real-life story of the González Valenzuela sisters, who were accused in the '60s of various crimes. 

"Las Muertas" follows sisters Arcángela and Serafina Baladro, who built and successfully ran an empire of brothels in the '60s and were ultimately accused and remembered as some of Mexico's most notorious and feared serial killers. The series is a fictional account of their lives, embracing a satirical tone that's apparent from the trailer and the images that were first released.

The series is made up of six episodes and was shot in various stunning locations across Mexico, including San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Guanajuato, and more.

"Las Muertas" stars some of the most prestigious Mexican actors, including Alfonso Herrera, Paulina Gaitán, Arcelia Ramírez, Joaquín Cosío, Enrique Arreola, and more. 

Herrera is one of the most notorious names on this list, starring in plenty of Mexican productions over his career, including "Que Viva Mexico," one of Estrada's most recent films, but also many international projects, like "Sense8," "Ozark," "Rebel Moon," and more.

Luis Estrada is a Mexican director, producer, and screenwriter, making a career out of films that satirize and question politics in Mexico and delve into some of the country's most controversial topics. He's the son of Jose Estrada, one of the most prolific Mexican directors of his generation.

Throughout Luis Estrada's career, he's been nominated for multiple Ariel Awards and has directed various critically acclaimed films, like "La Ley de Herodes," which won a special recognition at the Sundance Film Festival, and "El Infierno," which was nominated for the Spanish Goya Awards.

"Las Muertas" is expected to provide more of what Estrada is known for, including topics like corruption, misogyny, violence against women, and more. The Mexican publication Quien reports that Estrada described each episode as "independent movies with their own genre."
