A sequel to 'My Best Friend’s Wedding', the beloved 90s romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, is reportedly in development. According to Collider, Sony Pictures is in talks to revive the film and has brought on Past Lives writer and Academy Award nominee Celine Song, 36, to draft the script. The news follows recent comments from Dermot Mulroney, 61, who starred opposite Roberts in the original, confirming that behind-the-scenes discussions are taking place.

“There is talk of a sequel,” Mulroney told the New York Post. “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking”

In 'My Best Friend’s Wedding', Roberts played food critic Julianne Potter, who tries to sabotage the wedding of her longtime best friend Michael O’Neal (Mulroney) to his fiancée Kimberly Wallace, played by Cameron Diaz. The plot revolves around a pact the two leads made years earlier: if both were still single at 28, they’d marry each other.

The film helped cement Diaz’s stardom and introduced global audiences to Rupert Everett, 66, who played Julianne’s witty confidant George Downes.

There is currently no official word on whether Roberts, Diaz, Everett, or director P.J. Hogan, will return for the proposed sequel.

Released in the summer of 1997, 'My Best Friend’s Wedding` became a box office hit, earning $127 million domestically and ranking as the ninth highest-grossing North American release of the year. It opened at number two behind Batman and Robin.

The film received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and acting nods for Roberts and Everett. It also remains one of Roberts’ most celebrated 1990s roles, alongside Pretty Woman (1990).

In 2022, Roberts reflected on the film during an interview with E! News’ Daily Pop, celebrating its 25th anniversary. “So many people have someone that they can see themselves as in the movie, and I also just think that we really got lucky coming together,” she said.
