Each year on August 9, we commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The event recognizes their achievements and contributions and raises awareness about the world’s indigenous population.

To kick out the special day, Latin American singer-songwriters and activists Sara Curruchich and Lila Downs will be releasing “Pueblos,” a son jarocho and chacarera that talks about freedom. The Guatemalan and Mexican artists also collaborated with producer Amparo Sánchez.

Al Dia News reported that Curruchich, who is of Mayan Kaqchikel origin, says the song as “a hypnotic loop of African guitar, and elements that symbolize the union of peoples of diverse origins.” The whole project is a cry for justice. “There are historical-structural problems that we indigenous peoples continue to face,” she said. “All this creates and allows social injustices that undoubtedly threaten the lives of the people. Therefore, it is essential to accompany the struggles and resistance of the peoples of the world because in their struggles for rights, land, water.”
