Michael Douglas is celebrating Catherine Zeta-Jones with a love story nearly three decades in the making. The Hollywood legend marked his wife’s 57th birthday on Friday, Sept. 25, with a deeply personal tribute that looked back at the moment he first fell for her.
The date carries double significance for the couple as Douglas and Zeta-Jones share the same birthday, with Douglas turning 82 this year.
© Getty ImagesBut instead of simply posting a birthday message, Douglas shared a glimpse into the beginning of their romance through an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride. “I had never fallen in love on a movie screen before. Until I saw Catherine,” Douglas wrote.
The actor went on to describe Zeta-Jones as “magic,” explaining that what captivated him went far beyond her appearance. He recalled feeling unusually certain that he had just seen the woman he was meant to be with. “And I was certain, as much as I had ever been about anything, that she was the one,” he wrote.

Douglas accompanied the memoir excerpt with a photo of the longtime couple and a simple message to his wife: “Happy Birthday Catherine! I love you always and forever!”

“Sharing this special day with you, is as special as the day itself,” she wrote, adding, “Love you.”
Their shared Sept. 25 birthday has become something of a tradition in their marriage. Douglas was born in 1944, while Zeta-Jones was born exactly 25 years later in 1969. This year’s celebration comes shortly before another major milestone. The couple will mark their 26th wedding anniversary in November.

Douglas’ latest recollection reveals that his interest in Zeta-Jones began before they were formally introduced.
According to the official description of his memoir from Grand Central Publishing, Douglas saw Zeta-Jones on a movie screen and “instantly fell for her.” The book describes their subsequent relationship as a love story that changed his life and has endured through 25 years of marriage.

Douglas has told the story of their first encounter before, and apparently subtlety was not part of his strategy.
During a 2018 appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Douglas recalled learning on their first night together that they shared a birthday and that Zeta-Jones loved golf. His response? “I’m going to be the father of your children,” Douglas remembered telling her.
Zeta-Jones responded by saying goodnight. Douglas later admitted that the declaration may have been “a little presumptuous.”

The couple went on to welcome two children, son Dylan, now 26, and daughter Carys, 23. Douglas is also father to Cameron Douglas, 47, from his previous marriage to Diandra Luker.
Cameron joined the birthday celebration this year, commenting on Zeta-Jones’ post and wishing the couple more years filled with love and happiness.

Back in 2016, while reflecting on a career that includes Wall Street, Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct, Douglas told Entertainment Tonight that meeting Zeta-Jones stood above even his professional milestones. “Right now, it would probably be the Deauville Film Festival … when I met Catherine,” he said, calling it “the best memory I got.”

For their 25th anniversary on Nov. 18, 2025, Zeta-Jones looked back at their wedding day and remembered walking down the aisle toward Douglas. “I love you today as I did then,” she wrote. “Thank you sweetheart.”
