This week, the Golden Globe nominee shared a touching photo to her Instagram Stories showing herself sitting beside a baby on a couch. She blurred out the baby's face, keeping its privacy, but added two emotional words, “One day...” alongside a teary-eyed and thought bubble emoji.

Gomez has spoken openly about wanting to become a mom and the reality surrounding pregnancy for her, so the post carries a lot of weight.

The Wizards of Waverly Place star revealed in the past that she cannot safely carry her own children because of her medical conditions. In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, she said that pregnancy could put both her life and a baby’s life at risk.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she told the magazine. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, and the condition eventually led to her undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017.

And while lupus does not automatically mean someone is infertile, pregnancy can be significantly more complicated for people living with the disease. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus can increase the risk of kidney problems, high blood pressure, blood clots, preeclampsia, miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature birth.

In 2022 she also opened up about how her bipolar medication can be an issue when it comes to pregnancy.

But that doesn't mean it'll never happen. The Another Cinderella Story star has made it clear that the fact that she cannot carry a baby herself doesn't change her goals, with describing adoption and surrogacy as possibilities, and saying she feels grateful that both options exist for people who want to become parents.

"I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me," she told Vanity Fair. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people.

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby," she continued.

Benny says he prays having kids is in his future

As for her husband, Benny Blanco, he has been just as open about wanting children.  In a 2025 interview with InStyle, the producer said, “I love kids; I love being an uncle. I want to be a dad, though, God willing,” adding that he was “dreaming and praying every day” for that future.

We will have to wait and see what is in the cards for the couple.
