Dolly Parton’s extraordinary legacy extends far beyond the songs she wrote and the stages she commanded. Following the country music legend’s passing on August 25 at the age of 80, fans are remembering another tender part of her story, her lifelong love of dogs.
Animals had been part of Dolly’s world long before she became one of music’s most recognizable stars. Raised alongside 11 siblings in the mountains of East Tennessee, the “Jolene” singer grew up surrounded by the family’s “yard dogs.”
“I’ve been with dogs ever since I was born,” Dolly told People in 2024 while discussing the special connection she had always felt with them.

The beloved pet Dolly believed saved her life:
During her marriage to Carl Dean, Dolly had a Boston Terrier named Popeye. The little dog became a treasured member of their famously private home life, but his importance went much deeper than companionship.
© Fairfax Media ArchivesDolly revealed that Popeye unexpectedly appeared during one of the darkest moments of her life. The singer had been experiencing a period of depression and heartbreak when she found herself looking at a gun she kept in her bedroom for protection.
Just as she picked it up, Dolly heard Popeye’s paws coming up the stairs. His arrival startled her and brought her back to reality. She put the gun down and began to pray.
Dolly later said she believed Popeye had been sent to her at precisely the right moment, describing her beloved pet as a “spiritual messenger from God.”
© NBCPopeye was also part of the humor that Dolly and Carl shared throughout their nearly six-decade marriage. When tabloid stories once linked the singer romantically to her The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas costar Burt Reynolds, Carl presented her with a comically altered picture of Popeye and joked that the dog was her “baby” with the actor.
The playful gesture reflected how the famously private couple approached public speculation with humor rather than allowing it to disturb their life together.
Meet Dolly’s adorable ‘god-dog’:
Although Dolly revealed in 2024 that she did not have a pet of her own at the time, she still had a special four-legged companion in her life. Billy the Kid, a French bulldog belonging to her longtime manager Danny Nozell, became the singer’s beloved “god-dog.”

Like many of Dolly’s own songs, the book carried an uplifting message about believing in yourself, confronting bullies and finding the determination to pursue a dream. It even included playful canine versions of her classics, including “Jowlene” and “I Will Pawlways Love You.”

A love for animals that became part of her legacy:
Dolly’s connection with dogs was present from the very beginning of her career. Her first recorded song was titled “Puppy Love,” which she wrote with her uncle Bill Owens when she was just 11 years old. She recorded the song two years later during a trip to a studio in Louisiana.

The celebration combined musical performances with a runway show featuring dogs dressed in outfits inspired by some of her most famous looks.
The project grew out of Doggy Parton, the pet apparel, accessories and toy collection she launched in 2022. A portion of its proceeds supported Willa B. Farms Animal Rescue, a Tennessee organization dedicated to helping animals in need.
