The one and only Jennifer Lopez is 57! After spending more than three decades in the spotlight, JLo's life has made plenty of headlines. From her career milestones, divorces, and drama, one thing has stayed constant - her glowing skin, six-pack, and vibrant energy.
Thankfully, over the years, Lopez has shared some of the habits she credits for her glow, from prioritizing sleep and daily sunscreen to embracing exercise as a form of self-care.
Here's a look at some of the biggest wellness lessons Lopez has shared over the years
Sleep is her non-negotiable
If there's one piece of advice Lopez repeats more than any other, it's get enough sleep, ideally 8 hours. During interviews promoting JLo Beauty, she called sleep one of her biggest beauty secrets. She revealed one of her sleeping hacks with Vogue in 2022: "When I can't get enough sleep, there's a certain amount of hours that I feel like you can sleep before your face falls asleep," she said. So, it's either under 4 or over 7; that's my rule."
Sunscreen has been part of her routine since her 20s
Lopez has also credited one piece of advice she received early in her career for helping protect her skin. She told Elle in 2020 that she thinks everyone should start wearing it daily as young as 15. She started at 22 after seeing a dermatologist who gave her sunscreen and told her, "If you do this from now on, your skin is healthy, you're young right now, it's going to be great.' And he's like, ‘But the sunscreen is the thing.'"
She doesn't smoke and rarely drinks
Lopez has been candid that certain lifestyle choices have also played a role in her wellness. While she seemed to have stated drinking while promoting her brand Delola, she has repeatedly said she never smokes.
“I don’t drink, or smoke, or have caffeine,” told Hollywood Life in 2016. “That really wrecks your skin as you get older.”
From her trainer's mouth
Her trainer David Kirsch told Allure in 2016 they do a lot of circuit training and a lot of compound movements, "like crossover lunges and single-leg squats. We do a lot of burpees. We also do a little bit of kickboxing." “We’re doing a lot of planks, side planks, and we do this medicine ball toss while holding a lunge so we’re monopolizing the room,” he told Us Weekly.
Exercise is about mental health, too
Whether she's preparing for a world tour or filming a movie, Lopez has long made fitness part of her daily life. But she has often stressed that working out isn't only about maintaining her physique.
"I think there’s a positive correlation between exercise and mental health. When you find a good balance through determination and focus, we’re naturally pushing to be the best version of ourselves," she told Today in 2024.
Water is key
Lopez is reported to have a minimum of 7 glasses of water a day. She told HOLA! in 2019 that it's a major player for her workouts. "First of all, hydrate. Drinking plenty of water, especially before a workout, can help you push harder and get more out of your exercise routine," she said.
Daily affirmations
Lopez told Elle in 2020 she starts her day with positive affirmations. “I say I am youthful and timeless at every age. I live a beautiful adventurous life with my children, and we're all in perfect health, always," she said, explaining that "positive self-talk in your head really does create a beautiful person on the inside who maintains a beautiful person on the outside."
Diet is a balance
While Jlo eats very clean with a diet based around protein, vegetables, fats, carbohydrates, and water, she knows life is about balance. "Throughout the years I've learned the importance of maintaining a healthier diet. I still eat some of the foods I love, but in moderation. I won't deprive myself," Lopez said in the past.
But when cravings do hit, she relies on protein. "Protein is my go-to whenever I start having cravings. It fills me up and keeps me full longer. It's a great muscle fuel," she told HOLA!.
What she would tell a teenage JLo
Lopez told HOLA! in 2019 some advice we can all use: "Love yourself. Stop spending so much time worrying about what others think." "Because when you love yourself, and you're happy, it is reflected in your whole body – and that's what makes you truly beautiful. And use a good moisturizer."
