Claire Danes is sharing a surprising personal connection to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy decades after the late fashion icon's tragic death.
During a recent actress roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter, Danes revealed that she crossed paths with Bessette several times in the 1990s and still remembers her clearly.
The actress made the revelation while speaking with Sarah Pidgeon, who portrays Bessette in Ryan Murphy's FX series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
“You did a great job,” Danes told Pidgeon during the discussion.
“Thank you. That means a lot to me,” the younger actress responded.
A Friendship Through Fashion Designer Narciso Rodriguez
Danes explained that her connection to Bessette came through acclaimed fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez, who was a close friend of both women.
“Narciso Rodriguez is a good friend of mine, and I met her through him a number of times,” Danes recalled. “I remember her pretty vividly.”
Rodriguez famously designed Bessette's minimalist wedding gown when she married John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1996. At the time, the designer was relatively unknown, but the now-iconic dress helped launch him into international fashion stardom.
Before that, Rodriguez and Bessette had developed a close friendship while working at Calvin Klein, where he worked in design and she served as a publicist.
Danes herself remains a supporter of Rodriguez's work. Just weeks ago, she wore one of his designs to the Gotham Television Awards in New York, attending the event alongside her husband, Hugh Dancy.
The Height of 1990s Fame
The connection between Danes and Bessette came at a time when both women were becoming cultural icons in their own right.
Bessette was thrust into the spotlight through her highly publicized relationship and marriage to Kennedy, while Danes was emerging as one of Hollywood's brightest young stars.
After earning acclaim for her role on the cult-favorite teen drama My So-Called Life, Danes achieved worldwide fame in 1996 when she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann's modern adaptation of Romeo + Juliet.
Remembering a Tragic Loss
Bessette's life was cut short in July 1999 when she, her sister Lauren Bessette, and Kennedy died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. Kennedy was piloting the aircraft at the time.
Danes was just 20 years old when the tragedy occurred, making the memories she carries of Bessette all the more poignant.
Sarah Pidgeon on Bringing Carolyn Bessette Kennedy to Life
Before revealing her own connection to Bessette, Danes asked Pidgeon about the research process behind portraying such a widely scrutinized public figure.
“What was the raw material you used for Carolyn?” Danes asked.
Pidgeon explained that while there is no shortage of photographs of Bessette, many were taken after she became famous, making it difficult to uncover the private woman behind the public image.
“There are a lot of photographs of Carolyn, but so much of it is after she gained public recognition,” Pidgeon said.
“You hold yourself in a very different way, as I’m sure you all know, when someone’s taking your photo [versus] you’re trying to go to the grocery store.”
The actress noted that candid images and video footage of Bessette are surprisingly scarce.
“There was some videography, very little in terms of her vocal expression,” she explained. “I would curse, like: ‘Why can’t I just have two and a half minutes of her candidly speaking?’”
A Lasting Fascination With Carolyn Bessette Kennedy
More than 25 years after her death, Bessette continues to captivate the public imagination. Known for her understated style, fashion influence, and intensely private nature, she remains one of the most enduring figures of the 1990s.
Danes' recollection offers a rare glimpse into the woman behind the headlines—one remembered not only as a style icon, but as someone who left a lasting impression on those who knew her personally.
