Melissa Barrera is stepping into one of pop culture’s most iconic roles — and she’s doing it live, on Broadway. The 36-year-old actress is officially joining the cast of “Titanique,” making her Broadway debut as Rose DeWitt Bukater, the unforgettable heroine immortalized on screen by Kate Winslet in Titanic.

“Being on Broadway has been my biggest dream since I was little," Barrera tells PEOPLE. "Making my Broadway debut as Rose in Titanique — a show that I love so much, and alongside such an iconic cast — is beyond what I could’ve imagined.”

For Barrera, who built her career at the intersection of acting and music, the moment feels full circle. Her path has included major film roles and television projects, but the stage has always been calling.

Inside the Bold, Campy Reinvention of Titanic

If you think you know Titanic, think again. “Titanique” flips director James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic on its head, retelling the story through the lens of global music icon Céline Dion and her powerhouse catalog of hits. The result is a wildly irreverent musical comedy that blends nostalgia, camp, and vocal fireworks.

“What makes this show so special is how boldly it reimagines a story we all think we know," Barrera says. "It’s hilarious, unexpected and driven by music that has meant so much to so many of us."

The production, directed by co-creator Tye Blue, begins performances March 26 at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Opening night is set for April 12, with a 16-week limited engagement currently scheduled through July 12.

A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Chaos

Barrera joins a cast stacked with stage and screen heavyweights. Four-time Emmy winner and Tony nominee Jim Parsons will don heels as Rose’s mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater — a role played in the film by Frances Fisher.

Grammy nominee Deborah Cox takes on the role of Unsinkable Molly Brown, famously portrayed by Kathy Bates in the movie.

Meanwhile, Frankie Grande — brother of pop superstar Ariana Grande — reprises his Off-Broadway performance as Victor Garber. Co-creators and book writers Marla Mindelle and Constantine Rousouli also return to their original roles, with Mindelle starring as Dion and Rousouli stepping into Jack Dawson, the character made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio.

“I’m excited to work with Tye, Constantine, Marla and the whole team, and can’t wait to start rehearsals," Barrera says. "Hope to see everyone at the St. James Theater!”

A Career Built for the Spotlight

Barrera’s casting marks a major milestone in a career that has steadily gained momentum across film and television. She first broke out in In the Heights, the film adaptation of the musical “In the Heights” created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, starring opposite Anthony Ramos. She later headlined the musical drama Carmen, further cementing her reputation as a performer who thrives in music-driven storytelling.

Her television and film credits span genres. She led the Netflix survival drama “Keep Breathing,” starred in the psychological thriller “Bed Rest,” and appeared in the 2024 horror films “Abigail” and “Your Monster.” She is currently seen opposite Simu Liu in “The Copenhagen Test” on Peacock.

A Broadway Moment Years in the Making

For Barrera, thisis a long-held dream materializing under the bright lights of Broadway. She has consistently gravitated toward projects that blend emotion and music. Now, she steps into a role that demands both — with comedy layered on top.

With powerhouse vocals, cult-favorite energy, and a cast unafraid to lean into theatrical absurdity, “Titanique” is shaping up to be one of the season’s most talked-about Broadway events. And for Barrera, it’s the start of a new chapter on one of the world’s most iconic stages.
